In a shocking incident, a jealous husband from Russia chopped off his wife's hands after accusing her of being unfaithful to him.

Dmitry Grachyov, who has been given the name "Othello with an axe" by local media, had accused his wife, Margarita, of having an affair. The man reportedly had asked his wife to go for a lie detector test, to which she had agreed. But unfortunately that did not happen and Grachyov carried out the gruesome attack on her. According to reports, he cut her fingers using an axe in the middle of a forest in Moscow.

The 26-year-old then reportedly took her to a hospital before surrendering himself to police. He has been sent to police custody.

Meanwhile, doctors treating the mother-of-two said a "highly complex" nine-hour operation was needed to reconnect her left hand. The woman's right hand was "too damaged" to be saved, the Mirror reported.

The incident has left the couple's friends and family shocked with one saying that they were "close and loving". Other friends say, Margarita, who worked in marketing, was preparing to divorce her husband.

In an earlier incident, Margarita had reportedly once called the police over her husband's behaviour, but they only "talked to him".

A surgeon who operated on Margarita with his team said, "Let's hope that it is not in vain because so many people participated in seeking to (mend the severed hand. The case shocked even us."

"A normal person cannot do this," he added.

This is not the first case of such severe attack on wives by their husbands. In September, an Indonesian man chopped off his wife's foot in front of their children accusing her of cheating.

Kadek Adi Waisaka Putra was arrested soon after the incident and he could face 10 years in prison for the assault.
