Selena Gomez Breaks Silence on Family Claiming She Will 'Eventually' Have Children Amid Health Woes
The actor and Rare Impact founder discussed her hopes for a family after previously saying medical issues could make carrying a child dangerous

Selena Gomez said in a recent talk at the Fast Company Innovation Festival in New York City that she expects to have children 'eventually'.
The actor and beauty entrepreneur spoke about her hopes for a family despite medical issues she has said would make carrying a pregnancy dangerous.
Her remarks follow a 2024 interview in which Gomez said she could not carry a child herself. They also came days after her husband, music producer Benny Blanco, spoke publicly about wanting to become a father. Neither has announced a pregnancy or a timetable for having children.
Selena Gomez Connects Family Plans to Mental Health
Gomez raised the subject while discussing Rare Impact, her mental health non-profit, and its work against stigma. She said she was proud that the organisation was making a difference, though she believed there was still reluctance to talk openly about mental health. She linked that work to her younger sister and the children she hopes to have.
'I have a 13-year-old sister who means the world to me, and eventually I'll have my own children,' Gomez said, according to the Daily Mail.
She added that she did not want the subject to be taboo. The remark concerned the future she hopes for, rather than an announcement about how or when she and Blanco might start a family.
The sister she mentioned gave the discussion a personal reference point. Gomez said she wanted Rare Impact to continue growing and doing useful work, even if some people found its approach unusual. She did not connect that ambition to any specific plans for parenthood at the festival.
What Selena Gomez Has Said About Carrying a Child
In a 2024 interview with Vanity Fair, Gomez said medical problems would put both her life and a baby's at risk if she became pregnant.
She has spoken publicly about lupus and bipolar disorder, but the account does not identify which condition, treatment or combination of factors informed her assessment. That distinction matters when discussing a private medical decision.
'I unfortunately can't carry my own children,' she told the magazine. Gomez said she had needed time to grieve the possibility of not experiencing pregnancy as she had imagined it. She had expected that part of her life to unfold as it did for other people. By the time of the interview, she said she felt more at peace with a different route to motherhood.
She identified surrogacy and adoption as possibilities, without saying that she had chosen either. Her remarks at the festival did not clarify whether her medical circumstances had changed or whether she and Blanco were pursuing either option. The practical questions remain unanswered.
Benny Blanco Speaks About Fatherhood With Selena Gomez
Blanco, Gomez's husband of less than a year, said on the Today show, 'I'm a full-court press over here,' about starting a family. His comments described his own eagerness, rather than a decision or schedule the couple had made together.
On the Open Book with Jenna podcast, he said difficult parts of his childhood helped him find the courage to approach parenting differently.
He wanted to be the best parent and partner he could be, he said, while accepting that he would make mistakes. 'I'm excited when that day finally comes,' Blanco said.
