Benny Blanco Jokes Selena Gomez May Not Have 'Picked the Right Guy' Before First Anniversary
The music producer said married life with Gomez had been easy and described her as his best friend in a recent interview

Benny Blanco joked that Selena Gomez may not have 'picked the right guy' as the couple approach their first wedding anniversary on 27 September 2026.
Speaking in an interview with Jenna and Sheinelle in the United States on 15 September, the music producer said married life with Gomez had been 'so easy' and that he was still 'pinching himself every day'.
The remark was playful, not a suggestion that the marriage is in trouble. Blanco described Gomez as his best friend and said their first year together had passed so quickly that he was struggling to believe their anniversary was already approaching.
Benny Blanco Jokes About Being the 'Right Guy'
'Honestly, it happened so quickly,' Blanco told host Jenna Bush Hager. 'I was literally just talking to Selena yesterday because we're about to celebrate our one year and I was like, 'What even happened?' It's like, done already.'
He said the couple felt fortunate to be 'each other's yin and yang,' adding that their shared life often felt like spending time with a close friend.
'Everything is so easy, and she's my best friend,' Blanco said. 'Sometimes I get home and I feel like we're gossiping about the same thing. It's like, I don't know. It's my best friend that I get to spend the rest of my life with.'
'And yeah, I'm like pinching myself every day. I'm like, Are you sure you picked the right guy?' he joked.
Gomez and Blanco married in Santa Barbara, California, on 27 September 2025. The ceremony was officiated by rapper and comedian Lil Dicky, and guests reportedly included Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran, Paris Hilton, SZA, Paul Rudd and Zoe Saldaña.
The pair had announced their engagement in December 2024 after making their relationship public the previous year. Their wedding came after Gomez's highly scrutinised past relationships, including her long-running relationship with Justin Bieber, which had received extensive media attention.
That history was part of the broader public interest surrounding Gomez's relationship with Blanco.
Benny Blanco Says He Won Gomez Over by Being Nice
Blanco offered a similarly simple explanation for their relationship during an appearance on Sunday Sitdown with Willie Geist, published on 13 September. Asked about the relationship's beginnings, he dismissed the idea that he had used an elaborate strategy.
'I didn't use, like, black magic or anything,' he said. 'I just was nice.'
Blanco said understanding a partner, communicating openly and treating people well were important to building a relationship. He also used a more colourful phrase, saying that 'not being a dick and being nice to people put her in my orbit.'
He has also spoken about creating a list with his therapist outlining the qualities he wanted in a partner before his relationship with Gomez began. Blanco said he created the list because he wanted a lifelong partner and believed he had been approaching relationships in the wrong way. The qualities he described included someone 'age-appropriate,' nice, caring, compassionate and generally happy.
The couple have also discussed their private wedding. Blanco said they rented a palm tree farm and designed an unconventional setting around what he described as Gomez's childhood wedding vision, including off-centre Persian rugs instead of a conventional aisle. He said Gomez had wanted Persian rugs arranged off-centre and did not want the wedding to feel 'bougie.'
In his recent interviews, Blanco has described the marriage as easy and Gomez as his best friend. Gomez's own view was not expressed in the exchange, while Blanco framed the question as a joke.
