Selena Gomez Warns Medical Issues Would Put Her Baby's Life in Jeopardy
Selena Gomez and Benny Blanco plan family amid health issues

When Selena Gomez and Benny Blanco exchanged vows in an intimate California ceremony four months ago, the confetti had scarcely settled before friends began speculating about the couple's next chapter. Those close to the newlyweds now predict that 2026 could bring more than just marital bliss — a baby may be on the way, though the journey to parenthood is expected to look markedly different from what the pop star once imagined.
The urgency is not merely romantic. For Gomez, 33, time carries a medical weight that many expectant mothers never face. 'Selena and Benny are laying the foundation for the next 20 years, and they are still trying to figure out what method they will use to bring children into their lives,' an insider says. 'If you bring up the subject of starting a family with either of them, you hear the same seriousness and sense of urgency. They want this to happen now, not later.'
Why Selena Cannot Carry Her Own Children
The actress and Rare Beauty founder has been candid about the medical realities preventing her from experiencing pregnancy. In a conversation that sent ripples through her fanbase last autumn, Gomez revealed the painful truth: 'I unfortunately can't carry my own children. I have a lot of medical issues that would put my life and the baby's in jeopardy.'
Those complications stem from a constellation of chronic conditions that have affected the singer for years. Diagnosed with lupus — a relentless autoimmune disorder in which the body's defences attack healthy tissue — Gomez underwent a kidney transplant in 2017, receiving the organ from her close friend Francia Raisa. The transplant saved her life but also complicated any conventional path to motherhood.
Layered atop her lupus diagnosis is bipolar disorder, for which Gomez takes medication that medical experts warn could pose severe risks during pregnancy. The combination leaves her facing what she has called a necessary period of 'grief' — mourning the experience of carrying a child herself.
Surrogacy and Adoption Plans Take Shape
Yet where biology closes one door, modern medicine and compassionate alternatives open another. The Only Murders in the Building star has embraced both surrogacy and adoption as viable, meaningful paths.
'I find it a blessing that there are wonderful people willing to do surrogacy or adoption, which are both huge possibilities for me,' Gomez said, noting that her own mother, Mandy Teefey, was adopted. 'I'm excited for what that journey will look like, but it will look different. At the end of the day, I don't care. It will be my baby.'
Music producer Blanco, 37, appears equally enthusiastic. 'I love kids. I love being an uncle. I want to be a dad, though, God willing,' he said last year, months before the couple's September nuptials. 'I'm just dreaming and praying every day.'
According to sources close to the pair, the couple have thrown themselves into research with characteristic thoroughness. 'Selena and Benny have thoroughly investigated all aspects of surrogacy and adoption,' the insider says. 'They are building their knowledge around both methods and speaking to friends who have been through the process. All options are on the table except Selena carrying a child herself, barring a miracle, as she knows this is almost certainly not possible due to her longstanding health issues.'
The groundwork appears extensive. Friends who have navigated surrogacy and adoption have reportedly shared their experiences, providing the couple with real-world insights beyond medical pamphlets and agency brochures.
'They are approaching this process with a lot of optimism, a lot of hope, and people cheering for them as a couple, giving them confidence that they can pull this off without a hitch,' the source adds. 'Everyone in their circle predicts they will have a baby of their own before the end of the year.'
From Wedding Bells to Baby Dreams
Gomez has been transparent about her maternal aspirations for years. Before meeting Blanco, the actress — then single for five years — had devised a plan: adopt at 35 if no romantic partner materialised. 'I was like, "Okay, if this is the vibe, then what is the most important thing to me? Family,"' she told Vanity Fair.
That timeline may now accelerate, given her partnership with someone who shares her vision. Last year, when Gomez's beloved Wizards of Waverly Place character Alex Russo was revealed as a mother in the season two finale of Wizards Beyond Waverly Place, the actress couldn't contain her emotion. 'Alex Russo is a mummy,' she wrote on Instagram. 'Hopefully one day that'll be me.'
The couple, who wed on Sept. 27, 2025 in a star-studded ceremony at Sea Crest Nursery in Santa Barbara, appear more aligned than ever. Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran, and Gomez's Only Murders in the Building co-stars Martin Short and Steve Martin were amongst the 170 guests who witnessed the Ralph Lauren–clad pair exchange vows beneath white tents and autumnal blooms.
Now, as they settle into married life, the emphasis has shifted from wedding planning to family building. And while the mechanics may differ from the traditional route, the love — and determination — fuelling their journey is unmistakable.
For Gomez, who has spent years navigating public scrutiny of her health, the path ahead represents both vulnerability and hope. It's a reminder that motherhood, in all its forms, transcends biology — and that the most profound love stories often unfold in ways we never quite expect.
