Nicolas Cage's $10.5M Malibu Mansion's Driveway Swallowed by 30-Foot Sinkhole Due to Coastal Erosion

Nicolas Cage's $10.5 million (£7.75 million) Malibu mansion was hit by a dramatic driveway collapse on Tuesday after a roughly 30-by-30-foot hole opened outside the beachfront property, with coastal erosion reportedly contributing to the damage.

The collapse happened early on Tuesday, 8 September, as Southern California faced dangerous surf and coastal flooding amid the lingering effects of Hurricane Marie. It also resulted in a gas leak, prompting emergency crews and utility workers to shut off services while officials assessed the area.

Sinkhole Swallows Mansion Driveway

The driveway outside the National Treasure star's home on Sea Level Drive collapsed at about 5:45am. The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department and Los Angeles County Fire Department responded after a gas leak was reported, according to the City of Malibu.

Footage from the scene showed a large section of the driveway missing, with concrete, parts of a glass fence, and other debris visible inside the hole. Waves could also be seen crashing beneath the coastal property.

Fox News reported that the Los Angeles County Fire Department attributed the collapse to coastal erosion intensified by Hurricane Marie, whose waves and high tides affected the Southern California coast.

Cage did not appear to be at the property when the driveway collapsed, according to reports. Cage has yet to release a statement on the incident or respond to requests for comment.

KTLA reporter Rich Prickett said while reporting from the scene that the house looked like it was under some sort of renovation. However, there has been no official confirmation that the property was undergoing renovations.

The City of Malibu said its Building Safety Division and Southern California Gas Company were assessing the situation. Five homes on the private road were red-tagged, meaning entry was prohibited, while the road was closed.

Gas Leak Prompts Emergency Response

SoCalGas said the leak was brought under control several hours later and that natural gas service was temporarily shut off along an 85-foot section of the street as a precaution.

No injuries have been reported, and no evacuations have been ordered in the area.

Malibu officials said the city was also monitoring other areas affected by strong waves, high tides, and coastal erosion.

'The City is preparing for potential strong storms, strong waves, heavy rain, mudslides, and coastal erosion that are possible along the entire Southern California coast due to the forecast strong El Niño conditions,' the official statement read.

Cage purchased the approximately 4,000-square-foot beachfront mansion in 2024 for $10.5 million (£7.75 million), according to Realtor.com. The property includes a rooftop deck, an outdoor lounge, and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the ocean.

The home sits between the Pacific Ocean and Pacific Coast Highway.

The driveway collapsed during a coastal flooding advisory after Marie brought rain and dangerous waves to Southern California over the Labor Day weekend. Although Marie did not make landfall in the region, it contributed to dangerous surf conditions along the Southern California coast.

As crews continue assessing the damage, the immediate focus remains on safety around the collapsed driveway, damaged infrastructure, and nearby homes. Officials have not yet released a full assessment of the site.
