The shocking moment a man tried to snatch a three-month-old baby from the arms of her mum in broad daylight has been caught on video. Irene Cajal fought off the stranger during the incident at midday on June 6 in the central Buenos Aires neighbourhood of Paternal.

The attacker is believed to have followed the mother and daughter as they got off a bus. The terrified woman screamed as she was pushed to the ground, prompting a passerby to intervene and shout at the attacker.

The man then fled the scene with just the baby's blanket. In the assault, Irene's baby Bianca suffered a bump to the head but was otherwise unharmed. The entire incident was caught on security cameras on a neighbouring house.

Recalling the attempted abduction, the young mother described her horror saying: "The first thing that came to my head was to start shouting. I was screaming, 'My baby, no, my baby, no" but he kept on pulling harder. A neighbour heard my screams and that's why he ran away.

"I think he picked me at random but I really don't know what was going through his head. It was broad daylight and sunny and a beautiful day to go walking. I was running some errands and never imagined for one minute something like this was going to happen.

"My baby's fine, thank God. She was kept in hospital at first because she's only tiny and just three months and 15 days old. She suffered a bump to her head but that's all."

Irene's husband Boris, added that the attempted abduction has left the family in shock. "My wife is okay physically but this has changed our lives 100 per cent. "I work in the afternoons but on mornings I now have to do the daily errands myself or accompany her.

"How do you get over something like this, a man attacking you from behind and trying to take your child! You can never go out walking at ease again."

The attacker, who is still at large, was wearing a wooly hat and tracksuit bottoms and carrying a black rubbish bag over his shoulder Mirror Online reports. While his motives are not clear, it is thought it may have tried to snatch the baby after discovering his victim wasn't carrying cash or a phone.
