Sir Elton John paid tribute to his once estranged mother, Sheila, 92, in a heartfelt message on Mother's Day, 14 May.

The Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word hitmaker took to social media on Sunday to share a photo of him and his mother from the 1990s alongside a sweet message.

"Dear Mum, Happy Mother's Day! So happy we are back in touch. Love, Elton xo," the 70-year-old singer wrote on his Instagram page.

John had not spoken about his mother since his fall out with her in 2008. According to reports, the mother and son duo fell out after Sheila refused to cut ties with her son's two old friends, Bob Halley and John Reid, whom the singer had cut off.

However, they reconciled last year after feuding for eight long years. In 2016, the Rocket Man confirmed he had buried the hatchet with his mother ahead of her 90th birthday party, where he also performed.

"Out of respect for my mother's privacy, I have always shied away from speaking publicly about our relationship," he had said. "However, I can say that we are now back in touch and have been so since my mother's 90th birthday."

The reconciliation will benefit John, who has been suffering from "harmful and unusual bacterial infection" since last month. He had to cancel his performances at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas.

John thanked his fans for their support. He took to Twitter and wrote, "Woke up to an avalanche of well wishes. Thanks to everyone for reaching out. I'm resting well and looking forward to getting back on tour."
