Overview

India have taken a 320-run lead over hosts South Africa in the first Test of the three-match series at Johannesberg. Virat Kohli(77*) and Cheteshwar Pujara(135*) have taken the attack to the bowling side and are in a comfortable position going into the penultimate day of the Test match. India will be looking to put up a score in excess of 500 for South Africa to chase, with more than one day of the game left.

India finished the third day on 284/2 with Shikhar Dhawan(15) and Murali Vijay(39) being the two departed batsmen. The South African bowling failed to live up to the expectations and the likes of Dale Steyn and company were easily seen off by the Indian batsmen.

A session with more of the same tenacity will see them right on top and cruising towards an important first win in the series.

In the first innings, after winning the toss choosing to bat India put up a respectable total of 280 runs on the board. Virat Kohli top scored with 119 while Ajinkya Rahane put on a solid stand with the lower order to score 47 runs and take India to a deferential position.

Vernon Philander was the pick of the bowlers with four wickets while Morne Morkel took three wickets.

In reply, South Africa succumbed to a score of 244, with Graeme Smith top scoring with 68 and Philander putting on a good partnership with the tailenders, scoring 59.
