Strait of Hormuz remains key as Trump highlights Iran's unexpected energy gesture

Could Trump's claim of receiving a massive Iranian 'gift' signal a shift in control over the Strait of Hormuz?
Trump Says Iran Sent a Massive Oil and Gas 'Gift' Amid Rising US Talks
US President Donald Trump revealed that Iran had delivered a 'very big present' to the United States, describing it as a 'tremendous' prize connected to oil and gas and linked to the strategic flow through the Strait of Hormuz.

'They did something yesterday that was amazing', Trump said, as reported on TikTok by Nine.com.au. 'They gave us a present, and the present arrived today. And it was a very big present worth a tremendous amount of money. I'm not going to tell you what that present is, but it was a very significant prize'.
Trump suggested the gift demonstrated the US was 'dealing with the right people' in Tehran. 'It showed me that we're dealing with the right people. The gift they made to us was very significant, and they said they were going to do it, and it happened. They're the only ones that could have done it', he added.
NDTV also reported on Trump's remarks, noting the statement came amid discussions of US-Iran negotiations, though Tehran denies formal talks are underway.
When asked if the present was linked to the Strait of Hormuz, Trump confirmed it was 'related to the flow and to the strait'. He added that the US would retain authority over navigation in the region, stating, 'We can, we'll have control of anything we want'.
Strait of Hormuz Remains a Critical Route for Global Oil and Gas Flows
The Strait of Hormuz is a narrow but strategic waterway connecting the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman and wider international markets. Approximately 20 per cent of the world's oil passes through this corridor. Since US-Israeli airstrikes began in February 2026, tanker traffic has slowed significantly, sending global oil and gas prices sharply upward. Trump suggested the Iranian gift may be a signal towards stabilising the strait and reopening vital energy flows.
Trump Delays Strikes While Engaging in Talks With Key Iranian Officials
Trump postponed planned strikes on Iranian power infrastructure while indicating that negotiations are ongoing with Tehran. He said discussions involve a 'top person' in Iran seeking a deal. The US team includes Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, global envoy Steve Witkoff, and Jared Kushner. Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has offered to mediate, highlighting international interest in a potential resolution.
Iran Issues Statement Assuring Safe Maritime Passage for Oil Tankers
Following Trump's remarks, Iran communicated through the International Maritime Organization that non-hostile vessels could safely transit the Strait of Hormuz. Despite these assurances, shipping companies remain cautious, and tanker insurance costs have risen, reflecting continued uncertainty over maritime safety in the region.
Strategic and Economic Implications of the Iranian 'Gift' Revealed by Trump
Analysts suggest Trump's disclosure may serve both as a strategic signal and a subtle peace gesture. By framing the gift as oil-and-gas-related, the administration may be prioritising energy stability while managing diplomatic uncertainty. Global markets and allied nations are closely monitoring developments, while Iran's denial of formal talks underscores the sensitive balance in regional diplomacy.
