Taylor Swift's 'Encore' Theory Takes Off Before Singer Reveals New Single 'Patient Zero'

Taylor Swift announced a new single, 'Patient Zero', on her social media accounts on Tuesday, 22 September, after an 'Encore' theory spread among fans following a countdown on her online store. The song is due out on Friday, 25 September.

The news came after fans searched Swift's online updates and a recent Emmys sketch for clues to the countdown. Some saw a hint of 'Encore', while others expected a re-recording. Her announcement confirmed 'Patient Zero' but did not settle whether it will be added to an album.

On Tuesday morning, visitors to Swift's store were redirected to a password page showing a red curtain and a clock set to finish at 2pm Eastern Time. The page offered no explanation of what would appear when the timer expired. Changes to her accounts gave fans plenty to examine.

Swift subsequently posted the release date herself. 'I've been impatiently waiting to tell you', she wrote, announcing the new single for 25 September. The statement answered the question posed by the timer without adopting any of the theories fans had assembled around it.

Her online store replaced its sparkly orange design with dark grey and displayed three CD versions of 'Patient Zero'. Each has a different cover showing Swift in black. Her announcement photograph likewise showed her in a black high-neck top, and she changed her profile picture across social media.

Those visible changes marked the announcement, though they offered no official explanation of what might follow it.

The store connects the track visually to The Life of a Showgirl, her most recent album. It has not formally described 'Patient Zero' as a bonus track, a distinction that matters after speculation about a new edition of the record. The confirmed release is a single. A broader album announcement has not been made in the material accompanying it.

Taylor Swift's 'Encore' Theory

The theories had been building before the countdown appeared. On Monday, 21 September, a third sheet appeared on the 'My Letter' page of Swift's website, below a letter she wrote in May 2025 and the original Showgirl track list.

Some fans took the addition as a possible sign that she would announce a re-recording of her self-titled debut, whose twentieth anniversary falls this year.

Other clues pointed followers back towards The Life of a Showgirl. Swift changed the letter O to zero in her Instagram biography, and the same substitution appeared in the album's lyrics on Apple Music.

One fan writing on X thought the countdown looked connected to Showgirl and suggested a tour, music video or deluxe album. Those were guesses made before Swift named the single.

A separate 'Encore' theory drew on Swift's appearance with Mariska Hargitay in a parody sketch at the 2026 Emmys. She said, 'Saccharide. Aries. From the Vineyard. North or South.'

Fans interpreted a string of apparently disconnected words spoken by Swift as a hidden reference to 'Encore'. The singer has not confirmed that interpretation, and the announcement did not use the word as a title.

The store listings also show acoustic and piano CD versions of 'Patient Zero'. Neither the announcement nor the listings describe a deluxe album or a debut re-recording.
