South Los Angeles Shooting Investigation: LAPD Establishes Perimeter Near Florence and Figueroa

The Los Angeles Police Department established a perimeter near Florence Avenue and Figueroa Street on Monday morning after a South Los Angeles shooting at an assisted living facility. Officers requested an ambulance for three patients, the department said.

The response followed reports of gunfire in the 7000 block of Denver Avenue, where officers responded at around 10.50am. Roads surrounding the building were blocked as emergency crews attended the scene, and a suspected shooter was reported to be in custody.

South Los Angeles Shooting Prompts Road Closures

Residents were urged to avoid the area while officers secured the scene and investigated the shooting. Police activity continued around the property after the reported arrest, with the surrounding road closures affecting access to the area.

The reports did not specify which roads had been closed or how far the perimeter extended. They gave no indication of when the restrictions would be lifted, with officers still securing the scene and emergency personnel responding at the building.

Emergency crews transported three patients from the scene, according to the initial reports. Their conditions were not immediately known, and no details about the severity of their injuries were available.

The premises were described as an apartment complex in early accounts and as an assisted living facility in the report of the police response. Both descriptions placed the shooting in the same block of Denver Avenue, near South Figueroa Street and West Florence Avenue.

The identities of those injured were not immediately available. A caregiver who witnessed the shooting said the three people who were shot worked in the building.

Accounts Differ on South Los Angeles Shooting Arrests

Early scanner reports said two suspects ran to the upper floors of the apartment complex and were later taken into custody. Other accounts referred to one suspected gunman being detained, without explaining the difference in the reported number of suspects.

Authorities were also reported to have said that a gunman fired shots from the roof of the building before being taken into custody.

The account describing the assisted living facility said the shooting involved multiple people inside the premises. It was not immediately clear whether the reports of gunfire inside the building and on its roof referred to separate stages of the incident.

Police had not confirmed the suspect's identity or a possible motive. The circumstances leading to the shooting remained unclear.

Caregiver Describes South Los Angeles Shooting

Dorothy Mobley, a caregiver who was inside the building, told KTLA she had just walked in when a custodian who worked there spoke while standing at a desk. According to Mobley, the man said, 'I'm tired of this.' She said he then pulled out a gun and started shooting. Mobley ran out of the building after the gunfire began.

Her account identified the man as an employee of the premises, although police had not confirmed his occupation. It did not establish what his remark referred to or what had happened before she arrived.

'I was surprised, I never would have expected that,' Mobley said. She described the suspected shooter as someone who did not usually cause trouble. 'He's a nice guy, he don't bother nobody or anything. He's a good guy.'
