Who Inspired Taylor Swift's New VMA? MTV Reveals Mysterious 'External' Influence Behind New Award

Taylor Swift has received the first-ever MTV VMA Artist Director Honors, but one unanswered question now hangs over the new award: where did the idea for it actually come from?

VMAs executive producer Bruce Gillmer revealed that the 'kernel' of the idea came from 'external', before refusing to elaborate further. His cryptic explanation has left the identity or nature of that outside influence undisclosed.

Swift received the inaugural honour at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards in Los Angeles on Sunday, 27 September.

MTV Producer Gives Cryptic Explanation

Gillmer discussed the origins of the Artist Director Honors ahead of the ceremony, describing it as an extension of MTV's established Video Vanguard Award.

He said the new honour could be 'even larger in stature' and explained that its initial concept had come from outside. 'I'll leave it at that,' Gillmer added, without identifying a person, organisation or other source behind the idea.

The distinction matters because his remarks do not establish that Swift, her representatives or any particular individual proposed the award. Instead, Gillmer said the VMAs team subsequently spent considerable time developing what the honour would represent and considering its importance.

When it came to choosing its first recipient, however, Swift quickly emerged as a candidate. Gillmer pointed to her multiple Best Direction nominations, while MTV highlighted the increasingly prominent role directing has played in her career.

Why Taylor Swift Was Chosen

CBS and MTV announced the Artist Director Honors on 21 September as a new distinction recognising musicians whose work behind the camera has advanced music videos and visual storytelling.

Unlike the Video Vanguard Award, which celebrates an artist's music-video legacy more broadly, the new honour specifically focuses on the artist's work as a director.

MTV highlighted 12 Swift-directed projects when announcing her as the inaugural recipient. They include 'The Man', 'cardigan', 'willow', 'All Too Well: The Short Film', 'Anti-Hero', 'Bejeweled', 'Lavender Haze', 'Karma', 'I Can See You', 'Fortnight', 'The Fate of Ophelia' and 'Opalite'.

Swift had also been nominated for Best Direction seven times and won the category four times before receiving the new honour.

Mystery Remains Over Award's Origin

The timing also coincided with another addition to Swift's directing catalogue. Her 'Patient Zero' music video premiered during the VMAs, with Swift directing Dakota Johnson and Colin Farrell in the project.

Yet Gillmer's comments leave the most unusual part of the Artist Director Honors story unresolved. He disclosed that its initial 'kernel' came from external influence but offered no further explanation about whether that meant another artist, industry figure, organisation or something else entirely.

There is no evidence in his remarks that Swift or her team requested an award for her, despite speculation that followed his comments. What is established is that MTV developed a new honour centred specifically on artist-directors and selected Swift as its inaugural recipient.

Until Gillmer or MTV provides more information, however, exactly what prompted the idea remains a mystery. That unanswered detail has added another layer of intrigue to an award already making history with its first-ever recipient, Swift.
