Taylor Swift's Last 12 Music Videos Show Why She Just Won MTV's New Directing Award

Taylor Swift has become the first recipient of MTV's Artist Director Honors, and the 12 projects the network highlighted explain why the award is about far more than her appearances in front of the camera.

Swift received the inaugural honour at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards in Los Angeles on Sunday, 27 September. Dakota Johnson presented the award, which MTV created to recognise music artists whose work behind the camera has expanded music video and visual storytelling.

The 12 Projects Behind Swift's New Honour

When announcing Swift as its first recipient, MTV highlighted 12 directing projects: 'The Fate of Ophelia', 'Opalite', 'The Man', 'cardigan', 'willow', 'All Too Well: The Short Film', 'Anti-Hero', 'Bejeweled', 'Fortnight', 'I Can See You', 'Karma' and 'Lavender Haze'.

Swift's official website confirms she is credited as director on all 12. The list traces a transformation that began after she spent years primarily working with established music-video directors.

Her first solo directing credit came with 'The Man' in 2020. Before that, she had shared directing credits on 'ME!' with Dave Meyers and on 'You Need to Calm Down' and 'Lover' with Drew Kirsch.

From 'The Man' onwards, however, Swift increasingly took control behind the camera herself.

That progression continued with 'cardigan' and 'willow' before expanding into the 2021 'All Too Well: The Short Film', which Swift both wrote and directed.

From Music Videos to Visual Storytelling

MTV said the new honour recognises a sustained and influential body of work rather than a single video.

The network described Swift as a director who uses music videos as extensions of her songwriting, combining narrative, symbolism, humour and autobiographical themes.

Her projects have also grown more cinematic. 'All Too Well: The Short Film', starring Sadie Sink and Dylan O'Brien, moved beyond the conventional music-video format into a longer narrative built around dialogue and distinct chapters.

Swift then directed the videos for 'Anti-Hero', 'Bejeweled' and 'Lavender Haze' from her Midnights era, followed by 'Karma' and 'I Can See You'.

More recently, she directed 'Fortnight', featuring Post Malone, as well as 'The Fate of Ophelia' and 'Opalite'.

Swift's Directing Career Is Still Expanding

The award arrived on a night when Swift's newest directing project was also placed centre stage.

MTV premiered her 'Patient Zero' music video during the ceremony. Swift directed the video, which stars Colin Farrell and Johnson.

That project is newer than the 12 works MTV originally highlighted when announcing Swift as the inaugural Artist Director Honors recipient.

Swift entered the ceremony as a seven-time VMA Best Direction nominee and four-time winner. The new honour also moved Swift beyond Beyoncé's previous total of 30 VMAs, making her the most-awarded artist in the ceremony's history.

For viewers wondering why MTV chose Swift for its first artist-director award, the answer lies in a career shift that started years earlier. She went from sharing directing duties to repeatedly directing her own visual work, turning the camera into another part of how she tells her songs' stories.
