Terraria 1.4.5: Re-Logic Releases 'Bigger And Boulder' Update 15 Years After Game Was Deemed Finished
Major expansion marks the 15th anniversary of the 2D sandbox phenomenon
Re-Logic, the independent studio behind the multi-platinum sandbox hit Terraria, has officially released the massive 1.4.5 update, titled 'Bigger and Boulder.' The launch, which took place on Tuesday, 27 January 2026, comes exactly 15 years after the game entered development in early 2011 and nearly six years after the studio's 2020 'Journey's End' patch was marketed as the title's final major expansion.
The update has been in development for over three years, growing from a small collection of parity fixes into a sprawling content drop that rivals the game's largest historical expansions. According to SteamDB, the 1.4.5 patch introduces over 650 new items, bringing the total item count in the game to more than 6,000. The release serves as a kickoff for the game's 15th-anniversary celebrations, reinforcing Terraria's status as one of the most enduring 'live-service' games that lacks a traditional subscription model.
Crossovers with Palworld and Dead Cells
The 'Bigger and Boulder' update is headlined by collaborations with two major indie peers: Motion Twin's Dead Cells and Pocketpair's Palworld. The Dead Cells integration features the 'Beheaded' vanity outfit, five new weapons—including the Flint melee hammer and a Mushroom Staff—and a unique 'Health Fountain' furniture item that provides players with combat buffs.
The Palworld collaboration marks the second time Re-Logic has partnered with Pocketpair. Players can now find and summon 'Pals' within their Terraria worlds, including the mining-focused Digtoise and the fire-breathing Foxparks, which functions as both a sentry and a flamethrower. As reported by Nintendo Everything, these crossovers are integrated into the core progression, offering new strategic options for the Summoner and Ranged classes.
The 'Skyblock' Challenge and World Seeds
For veteran players, the update introduces a brand-new 'Skyblock' world seed. This mode forces players to start on a singular floating island with minimal resources, requiring advanced knowledge of the game's crafting trees to manufacture blocks, biomes, and boss arenas from scratch.
The world creation menu has been overhauled to allow for the combination of 'Secret Seeds.' This allows users to merge the difficulty of the 'For the Worthy' seed with the environmental hazards of 'The Constant' (a Don't Starve crossover), creating millions of potential gameplay permutations. According to PCGamesN, this focus on replayability has been a core pillar of the three-year development cycle, as the team sought to 'round out' the sandbox experience rather than just adding linear progression.
Quality of Life and Technical Overhauls
Beyond the new content, 1.4.5 implements some of the most requested technical changes in the community's history. A new 'Banner Menu' has been added, allowing players to store and activate combat banners without cluttering their limited inventory space. Additionally, the crafting window has been completely redesigned with a search bar and filter tabs to accommodate the game's massive item library.
As noted by IGN, the update also includes eight brand-new boss tracks, new transformation mounts—such as a bat and a rat—and a 'Boss Damage Tracker' for multiplayer sessions. Re-Logic has confirmed that this update brings all versions (PC, Console, and Mobile) to near-parity, clearing the technical debt required to finally implement cross-platform play.
While lead developer Andrew 'Redigit' Spinks has jokingly referred to almost every update since 2012 as 'the last one,' the studio has already hinted that 1.4.5 is not the end. Following the inevitable hotfixes for this launch, the team plans to move directly into developing the long-promised crossplay functionality.
