The first teaser trailer for Star Wars: The Last Jedi has been released following a double debut screening at the Star Wars Celebration event in Orlando, Florida.

A sequel to 2015's Star Wars: Force Awakens, the second instalment in the rebooted franchise, sees Rey (Daisy Ridley) – now the apprentice of original Jedi master Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) –discovering the power of the force, and, most importantly, the necessary balance between the light and the dark side.

Stormtrooper-turned-rebel fighter Finn (John Boyega) is also shown at the helm of an aircraft, while fans are given a brief glimpse of the Millenium Falcon in its full glory – admittedly without the steady hand of now-deceased Han Solo (Harrison Ford).

The second half of the trailer teases further bombastic action, and, potentially a huge space fight between the Resistance and The First Order. Shots of Poe's black X-Wing and the ever-destructive Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) also appear for good measure.

The trailer climaxes with ominous words from a weary-sounding Master Skywalker: "It's time for the Jedi to end."

Daisy Ridley said on-stage: "What I can say is that in The Last Jedi, we go deeper in Rey's story," she said.

"What is very apparent from where we left off is that Rey has a certain expectation as to what she might be getting from Luke.

"And as a lot of people know, it's difficult when you meet your heroes because it might not be what you expect."

A theatrical poster for the film was also revealed which pays homage to the artwork of the original 1970s trilogy and hints at Rey taking over from Luke.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is set to hit cinemas on 15 December, 2017.
