Bar an unfortunate/hilarious late miss from Lionel Messi, that couldn't have gone better for Barcelona. A dominant away performance from them leaves them in control of this tie with Luis Suarez scoring twice on the night.

Manuel Pellegrini's formation in the first half was woefully ineffective, and while they rallied in the second, a red card to Gael Clichy saw Barcelona end the tie as it started; in utter control.

FULL TIME

Manchester City 1-2 Barcelona

HART SAVES!

Hart dives to his left and bats the ball back out! It bounces straight back to Messi who tries to nod home the rebound with a stooping header but he sends it woefully wide!

Bony, 30 yards out from his own goal, loses control and Barcelona spring into action, freeing Messi down the inside left of the box. Zabaleta slides in, but can't get near the ball. Clear penalty.

PENALTY - Barcelona

Lionel Messi scoops a wonderful effort into the right hand corner of the net but it won't stand. The Argentine was marginally offside before he took the ball under control.

Into the final minute of the 90; City lose the ball again, allowing Suarez to spring forward before he is hauled down on the half way line. Fernando is booked.

Aguero does brilliantly well to keep hope alive from his side, jinking and powering his way down the left before Adriano slides in to foul and earn himself a yellow card.

As you can imagine, that red card has taken the sting out of City completely. Barcelona are stroking the ball around fairly comfortably once again. Ensuring Barcelona don't grab a third and waiting for something on the break is the order of the day now.

Pedro meanwhile is on for Barcelona, replacing Neymar.

Pellegrini wants to keep City's shape after going down to 10; Sagna comes on for Silva as they attempt to do just that.

Barcelona denied a wonderful third by an even better tackle from Zabaleta! A dazzling passing move down the inside left frees Alba but just as he is about to pull the trigger, the Argentine pokes the ball away with a terrific sliding challenge.

Oh, City. And it was all going so well. Just like last year, Pellegrini's side are down to ten as Clichy is shown a second yellow after a late challenge on Alves. He can't really have any complaints.

RED CARD - Gael Clichy (Manchester City)

City pull one back! It's Fernando who slides a pass in between the two Barcelona centre halves for Silva to chase down. The Spaniard is there first and brilliantly flicks the ball onto Aguero who carries it away from the challenge of Pique before firing past Ter Stegen.

Goal! Manchester City 1-2 Barcelona (Sergio Aguero)

City are all over the place at the back for a moment as Rakitic and Neymar swap passes before the latter overhits one towards the near post. Somehow, Messi plucks the ball out of the air and keeps it in play. He tries to slide on across goal but the chance eventually disappears for good as Iniesta's effort deflects into the arms of Hart.

First change of the game for City as Fernandinho comes onto replace Nasri.

Clichy is booked for a challenge on Rakitic and will miss the second leg at the Nou Camp.

Nick Howson from the Etihad Stadium

Some second half resolve from City and you could argue they should be level. Nasri, Dzeko and Aguero have all gone close amid a dramatically improved City showing.

Barcelona still playing football from another galaxy when they have the ball and Messi and co will keep the defence interested throughout, but City surely have to sacrifice losing this tie tonight in order to have a chance of winning it."

Silva clips it into a cluster of City shirts at the back post and its Demechelis who gets a head to it, but again it's straight at Ter-Stegen.

City again stretch Barcelona again as Dzeko pulls wide, bringing Pique with him before forcing a corner. City clear it, but Iniesta is then penalised for a high boot and City have the free kick 30 yards out from goal.

Aguero comes within inches of pulling one back! Silva starts the attack with an excellent sliding challenge that frees his teammate in the final third. He advances menacingly and with his marker standing off, tries to curl one into the far corner from the edge of the box. Ter Stegan dives desperately across but the ball is veering just wide anyway.

What a miss from Dzeko! From another corner, Kompany nods it on at the near post straight into the forehead of Dzeko who is unmarked dead in the centre of the box. His connection his good, but it's directed straight into the palms of ter-Stegen.

Much better from City as Silva opens up a yard in space in the box before cutting the ball back to Nasri who fires on goal but is denied by a wonderful block from Mascherano! City keep up the pressure.

Silva whips another cross into the box which Dzeko meets this time with a firm header, but he can't steer it on target. Better from City.

City almost fashion a chance straight away as a corner comes in from the right. Dzeko can't connect with a header but it drops to Fernando who can't react quick enough and the chance is gone.

And we are back underway for the second half.

HALF TIME

Manchester City 0-2 Barcelona

Juventus 2-1 Borussia Dortmund

Barcelona denied by the woodwork Dangerous defending from City sees the ball cannon off Milner and sets Alves through one on one. With Hart rushing out of his goal, the Brazilian opts to clip it over him, but his effort won't drop in time and bounces off the cross bar.

Juventus had the lead again! Tevez drives into the box before slipping a cute ball wide to his left where Paul Pogba has emerged. The Frenchman sweeps an accurate first time pass back into the six yard box where Morata is free to tap home and restore his side's lead.

Goal! Juventus 2-1 Borussia Dortmund (Alvaro Morata)

Replays of that penalty incident show the ball did blast the shoulder of Pique, but the Spaniard did not move his arm to block it. Besides, he was stood on the edge of the box, anyway.

Moments after Dzeko drives a vicious shot into the shoulder of Pique who was stood on the edge of the box. Hand ball? The referee isn't interested and plays on. Messi leads the charge down the other end but he is denied by a excellent challenge from Fernando.

Aguero is first to a rare stray pass and springs forward as City find some menace for the first time in a while. He sprays the ball wide to Dzeko before continuing his run into the box but Dzeko is going nowhere thanks a perfect sliding challenge from Pique. Silva tries to retrieve the loose ball but is judged to have fouled Alves in the process.

Nick Howson at the Etihad Stadium

On a day when the Premier League has been made to look greedy and spoilt, the champions of the self-professed best league in the world have been made to look distinctly average by a virtuoso display from Barcelona.

"Two Luis Suarez goals have the visitors ahead and had it not been for Joe Hart and Pablo Zabaleta, this tie could be have been consigned a write-off after 35 minutes.

"As it is City are (only) on a life support machine in this game thank to Suarez's second, a brilliant goal which saw Barcelona from walking pace to 100 miles an hour in a blink, s Alba crossed for the Uruguayan. Fine goal."

Almost another exceptional Barcelona goal as Messi, picking up the ball out on the right, cuts inside, plays a perfect one two into Neymar, only to be denied by Hart who was again off his line in a flash.

Dzeko almost breaks through down the right byline but his cross is deflected into the grateful arms of the Barcelona goalkeeper. City need half time badly, they are clinging on for dear life at the minute.

Suarez has a second but it's absolutely magical from Messi in the build up. On the edge of the D he receives the ball from Rakitic and bursts through three or four City defenders with bewildering strength and skill before slipping a pass through the narrowest of gaps into Alba whose emerged to his left. He pings it across goal where Suarez reacts quickest to prod home.

Goal! Manchester City 0-2 Barcelona (Luis Suarez)

City get a sniff of the ball and work a neat move down the inside left that wins them a corner. Suarez is back to nod clear and normal play resumes.

Suarez should perhaps make it two to Barcelona. A simple ball from Neymar is slipped in behind the back four for the former Liverpool man, who tries to slide one between the legs of Hart. The City 'keeper makes himself big, however, to save his team.

It's been a nervy, edgy start from the champions of England and that start has been capped by an error-strewn opening goal after a quarter of an hour.

"Lionel Messi's cross is flicked on by Suarez and when Kompany can't clear and the ball merely rebounds off him, the Uruguay forward reacts first to bang past Joe Hart.

"The nerves were palpable inside the Etihad Stadium before the goal, but they're now prevalent within every City fans after that early, tie-changing goal."

Dortmund are level! Reus accepts a gift of a pass from Chiellini before calmly finding the bottom corner. Easy for the German international.

Goal! Juventus 1-1 Borussia Dortmund (Marco Reus)

Barcelona take the lead in ruthless fashion. Messi pops up on the right and tries to hook the ball into the box. Suarez, on the right hand edge of the box tries to knock it on but it takes a lucky bounce of Kompany whose stood behind him and falls perfectly at the feet of the Uruguayan, who sweeps a fine effort into the bottom corner.

Juventus are off the mark after a very cagey opening 15 minutes in Turin, countering through Alvaro Morata. The Spaniard sees his shot saved by Weidenfeller but he spills it into the oath of Carlos Tevez, who gratefully converts from close range.

Goal! Manchester City 0-1 Barcelona (Luis Suarez)

Goal! Juventus 1-0 Borussia Dortmund (Carlos Tevez)

Moments later City surrender the ball in midfield and suddenly Suarez is in space inside the box. He dallies, and instead of taking the shot on, tries to clip one over the top for Messi but Kompany heads clear.

A sublime move from Barcelona almost opens City up. Iniesta spots Neymar inside the left of the box and the Brazilian's first touch is absolutely absurd, taking it inside past Zabeleta before threading a pass into Messi but he can't get his shot on target.

Milner takes it, trying to drive one under the jumping wall, but Barca deal with it.

Aguero springs into life for the first time, easily jinking past Aguero across the left of the box before he is hacked down by his countryman. City free kick in a dangerous position.

Jordi Alba, carrying the ball out from the back, looks for the pass but proceeds to ping the ball straight into Dzeko's mid-drift. He sportingly knocks the ball out of play while the rest of the planet winces.

Rakitic feeds a pass just behind Iniesta allowing City to swam around and win the ball back. It;s fed to Dzeko who waits for an option to open up but is felled by Mascherano.

Barcelona make a bit of a mess of the corner and City have it back. Sergio Busquets has looked particularly busy in these opening stages having seen a lot of the ball. As you may have guessed given Barcelona are in town.

Messi tries to find Neymar with a wonderful raking pass down the middle but Kompany just about gets a foot across to divert the ball out for a corner.

And we are off and underway at the Etihad and at the Westfalenstadion.

Nick Howson at the Etihad Stadium

"Plenty of debate over what legs remain in this Barcelona team led by a fourth different manager in as many seasons in Luis Enrique.

"Eleven straight wins prior to defeat against Malaga, a three-pronged attack in Lionel Messi, Neymar and Luis Suarez and the fact that Xavi only makes the bench tonight, should give you some indication as to the threat the Catalans still possess.

"Having said that, after last term's failure to win a trophy and the improvement of many of Europe's biggest sides, Barca no doubt arrive at the Etihad Stadium with their reputation somewhat damaged. It would be typical of their institution if they produced a masterclass tonight."

Manuel Pellegrini has picked a bold, 442 this evening. That probably says it all about ther Chilean's intentions tonight as City look to secure a commanding position in this tie tonight.

One note of caution for City; Sergio Aguero, Edin Dzeko, Gael Clichy and Pablo Zabaleta are a booking away from missing the return leg at the Nou Camp.

Nick Howson is at the Eithad Stadium for us this evening and will be bringing us updates throughout the night.

Manuel Pellegrini could have been accused of falling foul of conservatism for the visit of Barcelona 12 months ago, but his starting eleven tonight sees the Chilean revert to the enterprise which delivered the title last season.

"Sergio Aguero, David Silva, Samir Nasri and Edin Dzeko all start in a genuine 4-4-2 from the hosts in a team that though without Yaya Toure will not leave anyone wondering what their approach will be tonight.

"Barcelona don't spring any surprises with their team in a side that shows just three changes from the side that won 2-0 at the Etihad Stadium last season. Marc-Andre ter Stegen, Ivan Rakitic and Luis Suarez are the new faces."

Subs: Storari, Caceres, Ogbonna, Padoin, Pereyra, Coman, Llorente

Elsewhere tonight, Borussia Dortmund can continue their upsurge against Serie A champions Juventus. Jurgen Klopp's side have won their last three Bundesliga games to haul their way up to 12th having scored 10 goals in the process. For all their troubles domestically, Dortmund looked at ease in Europe in group stage of the competition.

So Manuel Pellegrini has opted for the presence of Fernando over Fernandinho in midfield this evening. On paper, that seems a tremendous show of faith in the former Porto star. While James Milner will support, it is an otherwise attacking line up from the Chilean.

BREAKING: Luis Suarez starts against an English side for the first time since leaving Liverpool last summer.

Barcelona team to face Manchester City: Ter Stegen; Alves, Mascherano, Piqué, Alba; Busquets, Rakitic, Iniesta; Suarez, Neymar, Messi

Barcelona meanwhile are looking to reach their eighth straight quarter final and will aim to do so having topped their group last year, losing just one match along the way.

City's group form in this competition continued to puzzle last year. A home defeat to Bayern Munich in their first game? Understandable. A 1-1 draw to Roma two weeks later? Not great, but by no means disgraceful. Surrendering a 2-0 lead to CSKA Moscow to draw 2-2, before losing at home to the Russian side? What's all that about? City saved themselves a humiliating exit in fine circumstances however and their wins over Bayern and Roma in their final two games ensure they deserve to be here this evening.

A 4-1 defeat at this stage of the competition last season saw Manchester City's miserable European record continue. They face the same opposition tonight in Barcelona but given the dramatic circumstances in which they secured their place in the last 16 a few months ago, being here is a miracle in itself.

Two goals in five minutes from Sergio Aguero lifted Manuel Pellegrini's side from 2-1 down to 3-2 up against Bayern Munich at the Etihad last November. A flawless away performance in Rome ensured their qualification two weeks later. City did it the hard way.
