Burnham Plans Trump Talks as Ukraine Faces Shortage of Patriot Missiles

British Prime Minister Andy Burnham is preparing to take Ukraine's urgent request for more Patriot air-defence missiles directly to US President Donald Trump, as Kyiv faces a shortage of interceptors ahead of a potentially difficult winter.

Burnham said on 24 August that he expected to travel to New York in September for the United Nations General Assembly, where European leaders are considering further talks with Trump over Ukraine's air-defence requirements.

The potential meeting would be Burnham's first visit to the United States since becoming prime minister on 20 July. It follows his first international trip, during which he travelled to Kyiv and met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Why Ukraine Needs More Patriot Missiles

Ukraine is seeking additional Patriot interceptors because the systems are among its most important defences against Russian ballistic and cruise missile attacks.

Zelenskyy has repeatedly called on allies to replenish Ukraine's stocks, particularly before winter, when Russia is expected to intensify attacks against energy infrastructure.

Burnham said after his Kyiv visit that he was 'really optimistic' the shortage could be resolved, but acknowledged that securing enough interceptors would require several countries to work together.

European leaders are considering another meeting of the Coalition of the Willing alongside the September UN General Assembly, to secure additional Patriot supplies from the United States and other countries.

Burnham Plans to Raise Ukraine's Needs With Trump

The planned US trip would allow Burnham to press Trump directly over Ukraine's air-defence needs.

The British prime minister has already made support for Kyiv a central element of his foreign policy. During his 24 August visit, he co-chaired the Coalition of the Willing meeting alongside French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Zelenskyy.

The leaders agreed that strengthening Ukraine's air defence was an urgent priority and pledged to increase military support despite Russian threats.

Burnham also announced that Britain had agreed to allow defence company MBDA to release classified information on British components used in the long-range SCALP missile. The move is intended to help Ukraine and France establish local assembly lines for the weapon.

Winter Adds Pressure to the Talks

The timing of the proposed discussions is crucial.

Ukraine's air-defence requirements are expected to become even more pressing as winter approaches and Russia continues targeting critical infrastructure. The Coalition of the Willing has already agreed on the need for immediate assistance to Ukraine's energy sector, including specialist equipment and support through the Ukraine Energy Support Fund.

The UK government has also emphasised that Russia's escalating attacks have caused the highest number of civilian casualties since the beginning of the full-scale invasion in 2022.

For Burnham, securing additional Patriot interceptors would demonstrate that Britain's support for Ukraine extends beyond political statements.

Trump Meeting Could Test UK-US Relations

The proposed meeting comes at an important moment for Burnham's relationship with Trump.

The September talks could cover Ukraine's immediate defence requirements as well as wider issues affecting UK-US relations. But Ukraine is likely to be among the most urgent subjects, particularly as European governments attempt to ensure Kyiv has sufficient air-defence capabilities before winter.

Burnham has said he is clear about what needs to be done in the coming weeks. His planned journey to New York could therefore become an important test of whether Britain and its European allies can persuade Washington to help close Ukraine's growing missile gap.
