UK To Send 'Time-Limited' Defence Support to Saudi After Houthi Attacks: What Is the RAF Voyager?

Prime Minister Andy Burnham agreed to provide military defence support to Saudi Arabia, which is locked in a reignited battle with Iran-backed Houthis in Yemen. Burnham said the UK will provide 'defensive air-to-air refuelling (AAR)' support, but it will be for a limited time only.

'We have received a request from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for military support, and on the advice of the defence secretary and the foreign secretary, last night I agreed to that request for defensive air-to-air refuelling,' Burnham told reporters as he travelled to the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

'Secure the Interests of Britain'

On 8 September 2026, the Houthis launched a large-scale attack using ballistic missiles and drones against southern Saudi Arabia, targeting energy facilities and military sites. Saudi authorities said dozens of people were wounded in the attacks.

The attacks have continued to escalate. On 19 September, Saudi Arabia said it intercepted a Houthi ballistic missile targeting Riyadh, while the Houthis claimed attacks on several other locations and infrastructure sites. Saudi Arabia has also reportedly sought assistance from Western and regional allies as its stocks of missile interceptors run low.

Burnham, following the advice of Defence Secretary Wes Streeting and Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband, agreed to help. He said he was 'acting to secure the interests of Britain and the wider region, because of course Saudi Arabia has been experiencing attack, is looking at potential further disruption and we need to keep those pathways open.'

He added that the support is 'time-limited' and will be kept under review. Based on the agreement, one RAF Voyager is expected to be deployed to refuel Saudi aircraft on defensive missions. The assistance is expected to last only a few weeks, although the exact duration remains under review.

What Is the Royal Air Force Voyager?

The Voyager is the RAF's only air-to-air refuelling tanker. It also operates as a strategic air transport aircraft. There are two versions of the aircraft: the Voyager KC.Mk 2, which has two underwing pods to refuel fast jets, and the KC.Mk 3, which has an additional centreline hose for larger aircraft.

The aircraft can also accommodate up to 291 passengers plus cargo. According to the RAF website: 'Voyager can carry up to 109 tonnes of fuel and significantly extend the range and endurance of both fighter and compatible heavy aircraft.'

'This force multiplication effect enables receiver aircraft to project air power further and for longer. Voyager has a flexible aeromedical configuration that includes the ability to carry up to 40 stretchers and three critical care patients,' the description also said.

UK-Saudi Relations

The UK and Saudi Arabia have a long-standing diplomatic, defence and economic relationship. The two countries are also preparing to mark 100 years since the signing of the Treaty of Jeddah in 1927.

This month, the Houthis have attacked Saudi cities and energy sites, including areas around Riyadh and the Red Sea coast. The escalation has raised concerns about the security of the region's energy infrastructure and shipping routes.
