Relations between the United States and Canada have come under strain in recent weeks as US President Donald Trump continues to demand control and annexation of Greenland. This has led to concerns amongst online users that Trump may eye an annexation of Canada next, especially as the Canadian military has reportedly created war models.

The concerns intensified after reports emerged that the Canadian military recently carried out war games in response to a potential US military invasion. The simulation marks the first time in a century that Canada has had to model a potential US invasion, with military planners expecting US forces could overcome Canada's strategic positions both on land and sea within a week or as soon as two days.

Canadian Armed Forces Prepare War Models

Two Canadian officials revealed that the Canadian military is preparing a response to a possible US military invasion, noting the continued threats made by Trump. Canadian officials have also reportedly considered sending a small unit of troops to Greenland in solidarity with Denmark, which maintains sovereignty over the Arctic territory.

According to The Globe and Mail, Canadian armed forces are looking into insurgency tactics like those used by the Taliban in Afghanistan during the two-decade conflict. They are also considering tactics used by Ukrainian forces against Russia in the ongoing war that began in 2022.

Canadians have grown increasingly concerned over the possibility of a US military attack. However, despite the possibility, officials think such an invasion remains unlikely. Military planners are modelling an invasion from the south, expecting US forces to overcome Canada's strategic positions both on land and sea in a week or as soon as two days.

Strained Relations Between Neighbouring Countries

The reported war simulations come as relations between the two neighbouring countries have come under significant strain. The tension stems from Trump's repeated demands to annex Greenland over supposed security concerns. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney seemed to condemn coercion by global powers on smaller countries during his speech at Davos, gaining widespread attention online.

Trump, who has also floated the idea of annexing Canada, said during his Davos remarks that Canada has greatly benefited from its relationship with the US. Aside from Canada, Trump has floated the idea of annexing Venezuela, Cuba, and Greenland. Trump said Canada showed a lack of gratitude to the US.

'Canada lives because of the United States,' said Trump. 'Remember that, Mark, the next time you make your statements.'

Carney referenced Trump's own remarks in his response upon returning from Davos. 'Canada doesn't live because of the United States. Canada thrives because we are Canadian.'

Carney added that whilst the two countries have a good partnership economically, in security, and culturally, Canada maintains its sovereignty.

'We are masters in our home, this is our country, it's our future, the choice is up to us,' said Carney.

Trump has also revoked the invitation to Carney to join his so-called 'Board of Peace'. The 'Board of Peace' would lead efforts to maintain the ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.
