A 20-year-old man has died after falling down the chimney of a seven-storey residential building in Westminster. The body of the man was found by police at the address at Great Cumberland Place in the early hours of 31 July.

It is believed the man, who has not yet been named, was sitting on the roof of the building when he fell backwards into the chimney.

His body was located at the base of the chimney in the lower basement of the building. Emergency services including Metropolitan police, London Fire Brigade and Ambulance Service attended the scene.

Next of kin have been notified of the incident and police are currently awaiting formal identification. The death has also been referred to the Coroner.

Inspector Ian Bond of Westminster Police said: "This was a difficult and protracted recovery and is an excellent example of partnership working between all three emergency services.

"Our thoughts are with the young man's family at this sad time."
