Viewers scanning the audience at the 2026 Grammy Awards for a glimpse of Glinda pink or a signature high ponytail are destined for disappointment. Despite lighting up the red carpets at the Critics Choice Awards and the Golden Globes earlier this awards season, Ariana Grande has chosen to spend music's biggest night away from the flashing cameras.

While the pop superstar has remained silent on social media regarding her whereabouts, her absence speaks volumes amidst a swirl of fan speculation and a busy professional calendar.

A Major Win For 'Defying Gravity' Despite The Absence

Even without physically attending the ceremony, Grande made her presence felt early in the evening. During the Grammys pre-show, news broke that she and her Wicked co-star, Cynthia Erivo, took home the award for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance. Their version of "Defying Gravity" was a huge moment for the movie's soundtrack and really proved how well their voices work together.

This win is another major milestone for their partnership. It was also a pretty big deal for Grande specifically because it was her only chance at a trophy for the 2026 ceremony. Even though she didn't show up to accept it, the win means the Recording Academy didn't completely ignore her work this year.

Ongoing Snub Allegations And The History Of Missing Ceremonies

This isn't the first time she has decided to skip the event. Grande didn't go to last year's show either, which seemed to stem from similar feelings of being undervalued.

Back in 2025, she actually had three nominations, including nods for "The Boy Is Mine" and "Yes, And?". But most people assumed she stayed home because her album Eternal Sunshine was shut out of the major categories like Album of the Year.

That friction between her music and the Academy seems to be lingering in 2026. Fans were upset when the nominations dropped and saw that Eternal Sunshine: Brighter Days Ahead didn't get any recognition. The snub felt especially weird to her supporters since that project did so well commercially and critically. After all, "Brighter Days Ahead" just swept the MTV VMAs with wins for Video of the Year and Best Pop Song.

From Hollywood Sets To The West End Stage

Fans might be sad about her empty seat at the arena, but Grande actually has a good reason for being picky about where she shows up. She is currently balancing a ton of acting projects that mark a serious shift in her career.

Her schedule for the rest of 2026 and heading into 2027 is incredibly full. We are going to see her in theaters again when Focker In-Law drops this November. On top of that, she is joining the cast for season 13 of American Horror Story, which should show us a totally different side of her acting skills.

Outside of Hollywood, Grande is getting ready for a huge return to the stage. Her tour starts in June, so she is likely deep in rehearsals right now.

Looking even further ahead, she has committed to a prestigious theatrical run in the summer of 2027.

She will be performing alongside Bridgerton star Jonathan Bailey in Sunday in the Park With George on the West End. With such a demanding slate of projects, it appears Grande is prioritising her craft over the awards circuit this season.
