Thousands of disappointed Drake fans are demanding refunds after the rapper pulled out of his Headline slot at the 2014 Wireless festival at the eleventh hour.

The 27-year-old hip hop star confirmed that he had cancelled his appearance on the advice of doctors after falling ill. He had been scheduled to take to the stage for two gigs in Birmingham and London on 4 and 5 July.

The last-minute cancellation means that Kanye West will now headline two nights in London and Rudimental will play an extended set in Birmingham.

In a statement to fans, Drake said: "To my beloved fans, it truly breaks my heart that I won't be able to perform as planned at Wireless and Roskilde this weekend.

"I got sick a few days ago and although I am on my way to bouncing back, my doctors have made it clear that I am not physically fit to fly or deliver the performance my fans expect and deserve from me."

But his heartfelt apology did little to console fans who had paid upwards of £70 to see him perform live.

Wireless will move from last year's location in east London's Olympic Park to a new home in north London's Finsbury Park. Drake previously headlined Wireless back in 2012 when the event was still held at London's Hyde Park.

Ticket holders attending the festival, which is in its tenth year, will be able to request a refund from the sellers before but not during the event.
