11-Year-Old Charged With Second-Degree Murder in Fatal Shooting of Her 15-Year-Old Brother in Oklahoma

An 11-year-old girl has been arrested after her 15-year-old brother was fatally shot at a home in Edmond, Oklahoma, police said.

The girl, whose name has not been released because she is a juvenile, was arrested shortly before 1am on Thursday, 10 September, according to the Edmond Police Department. She was transported to a juvenile facility, where she was booked on a charge of second-degree murder.

Police were called to a home in the 1100 block of Lapwing Road shortly after 4pm on Wednesday, 9 September, following reports of a shooting. Officers found the 15-year-old boy inside the property suffering from a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities have not identified the teenager or disclosed further details about his injuries. The shooting remains under investigation.

Police Investigate What Happened

Investigators have not said what prompted the shooting or why the 11-year-old allegedly fired the weapon. Police have also not disclosed where the firearm was located or how the girl allegedly gained access to it.

According to a recording of Edmond Police and Fire communications obtained by Broadcastify, the boy suffered a gunshot wound to the head. His mother was reportedly not at the residence when the shooting occurred.

The mother later told investigators that her daughter called her and said someone had shot her son, according to reports citing the emergency communications.

At least one other person was reportedly inside the home when the shooting took place. Police have not identified that person or publicly explained their involvement in the incident.

Authorities described the case as an isolated incident and said there was no indication that the shooting posed a continuing threat to the wider Edmond community.

Detectives are continuing to gather evidence and interview people who may have information about the circumstances surrounding the teenager's death.

Because the suspect is only 11, authorities have provided limited information about her identity and the proceedings. Juvenile cases are subject to additional privacy protections, particularly when a child is accused of a serious offence.

Juvenile Suspect Remains in Custody

'We recognise this is a heartbreaking situation for the family involved. Our thoughts are with them as they grieve this tragedy,' the department said in a statement.
