A chilling 911 call warning of 'booby traps' inside a suburban home ended in tragedy on Tuesday morning after authorities discovered a family of four dead inside a residence in Northern California. Police say the call, allegedly placed by the gunman himself, set off a tense and complex emergency response that ultimately revealed a devastating murder-suicide.

Officers were first dispatched to a home in Rancho Cordova after reports of gunfire in the area around 8:30 a.m.

As deputies worked to assess the danger, they received a second 911 call from a man who claimed responsibility for firing a weapon and warned that the house had been rigged with traps, according to local media reports.

When law enforcement finally entered the property, they found a man, a woman and two children dead inside. Officials later confirmed that the victims were members of the same family, sending shock waves through a quiet neighbourhood where residents said nothing seemed out of the ordinary.

Authorities Describe A Complex And Dangerous Response

The Sacramento County Sheriff's Office said the scene was being investigated as a murder-suicide, with the adult male believed to have killed his partner and two children before turning the weapon on himself. Officials stressed that the warning about traps significantly complicated the initial response, forcing officers to proceed with extreme caution.

Sacramento County Sheriff's spokesperson Sgt. Edward Igoe told KCRA that deputies deployed a drone into the home before making entry. 'We launched a drone into the residence and it was discovered that there was one male subject that appeared to be unresponsive down in the residence,' he said.

After determining it was safe to enter, officers discovered the bodies of a woman and two children inside the house. The male victim was also found deceased. Authorities later confirmed that no deputies were injured during the operation.

'It's always difficult,' Igoe said, describing the emotional toll on first responders. 'A response to something of this magnitude is always extremely difficult. And honestly, as an agency, just our prayers are with friends and families of those involved today.'

Victims Identified As Local Family

The victims were identified as David Edward Vallerga Jr., 58, his wife Lindsey Peralta Vallerga, 49, and their two children, a 13-year-old son and an 11-year-old daughter. The family lived together in the Rancho Cordova home where the bodies were discovered.

According to reports, the husband and wife operated two tutoring businesses that were run out of the family residence. Investigators noted that there was no prior history of domestic violence calls associated with the address, a detail that has added to the shock surrounding the case.

Speaking with CBS News Sacramento, the sheriff's office spokesperson urged compassion and vigilance in the wake of the tragedy. 'As an agency, as a human, as a father, look out for each other and take care of each other in this very difficult time,' he said.

Neighbours Left Stunned By Violence

Residents in the neighbourhood described the area as peaceful and family-oriented, saying the events were completely unexpected. KCRA reporters spoke with neighbours who gathered outside, trying to make sense of the heavy police presence and sombre news.

'It's quiet for the most part,' neighbour Cameron Daughtry told the outlet. 'You'll see people walking their dogs, running. For the most part, we don't have any loud parties going on here and stuff like that. And it's very quiet. Everybody's friendly and peaceful. So to see this, it's wild.'

The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to establish a clearer timeline and motive behind the killings. Officials have not said whether any actual traps were found inside the home.
