Jimmy Kimmel Exit Report Collides Head-On With ABC Denial While Trump and the FCC Circle the Network

ABC has denied a report claiming 'Jimmy Kimmel Live' will end once the host's current contract expires in 2027, calling the story inaccurate as speculation swirls around the show's future amid a broader, ongoing battle between the network and the Trump administration.

The New York Post's Page Six reported that Kimmel's contract would not be renewed past its expiry date next year. ABC pushed back, telling media outlets that 'any reports about the future of the show at this point are purely speculative.' The denial lands just as Kimmel prepares to return from his usual summer hiatus.

Contract Extension and FCC Pressure

Kimmel extended his deal with Disney in December 2025, securing a contract that runs through May 2027 and would mark 24 years on air since his 2003 debut. That extension came just months after comments he made about the fatal shooting of Charlie Kirk sparked a backlash that pulled him off the air for nearly a week in September 2025.

Federal Communications Commission chairman Brendan Carr publicly warned broadcasters at the time that they could face consequences over Kimmel's remarks, telling a podcast that companies could 'change conduct' or face 'additional work for the FCC ahead'. ABC reinstated Kimmel six days later following criticism from figures across the political spectrum.

The pressure on ABC has continued into 2026. In April, after Kimmel joked about Melania Trump during a segment tied to the White House Correspondents' Dinner, the FCC ordered Disney's ABC to file early license renewal applications for all eight of its owned television stations. The agency tied the review to Disney's diversity initiatives, though it was widely seen as retaliation over Kimmel's programming.

By August 2026, the dispute had escalated into litigation, with ABC and Disney suing the FCC and accusing the commission of waging what they called a retaliatory campaign against them because the Trump administration disapproved of their programming.

Trump's Calls and Kimmel's Response

President Trump has repeatedly renewed calls for Kimmel's removal from ABC throughout 2026. Kimmel has responded publicly on his show, defending his comments as protected speech and joking about his own value to Disney, telling audiences during the network's upfronts that he may have cost the company 'a lot of money this year, billions.'

Kimmel has hinted before at stepping away from late-night. In early 2024, he said he believed his current contract would be his last, though he acknowledged viewers might be sceptical given his history of similar statements not coming true. 'I still have a little more than two years left on my contract, and that seems pretty good,' he said at the time.

Guest Hosts Filled in Over the Summer

While Kimmel was on his usual summer break, ABC leaned on a rotating slate of guest hosts. Rosie O'Donnell proved the standout, posting the highest average viewership of any fill-in host for the week of 17 August, with a total viewership of 2.17 million.

As of Tuesday, neither Kimmel nor Disney has confirmed any plans for the show to end when his contract expires in May 2027.
