An aggressive airline passanger who abused cabin crew aboard a Jet2.com flight from Newcastle to Tenerife on New Year's day, forcing it to divert to Shannon in Ireland, has been issued with a £6,800 bill for the delay.

The 42-year-old holidaymaker was carted off by local police at the airport in the Irish Republic for her "unacceptable behaviour", the Irish Examiner reported.

On top of the £6,800 bill the woman, who has not been named, has been given a lifetime ban by Jet2.com.

Phil Ward, managing director of Jet2.com, said: "The safety and welfare of our customers and staff is always our number one priority.

"Passengers were inconvenienced on New Year's Day because this woman's unacceptable behaviour towards our crew caused a substantial delay. We will therefore be pursuing the bill for the cost and we will do everything we can to assist the Irish authorities in working towards a potential prosecution."
