Avengers 4 is not titled Infinity War and Zoe Saldana simply misspoke claims Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 director James Gunn Marvel Studios

Earlier this week, it was believed that Zoe Saldana let slip during an interview that upcoming sequel Avengers 4 was titled Avengers: Infinity Gauntlet. Given the subtitle's significance within the Marvel Comics, fans understandably starting getting excited, but now director James Gunn has claimed that the future film will not have that name and that Saldana "misspoke."

Talking to Yahoo Movies UK, the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 filmmaker stated: "It's not the title. My guess is that Zoe just misspoke. I'll talk to Zoe today, but I would imagine that is just Zoe misspeaking and saying 'Infinity Gauntlet' instead of 'Infinity War.'"

While Gunn may well be correct in that Saldana misspoke, it seems unlikely that her supposed slip-up was calling Infinity War by a different name – particularly when the title she did use means something within the Marvel Comics and the upcoming Avengers movie's official subtitle has been known for many months now. Aside from that, in the clip, the Star Trek actor actually states: "I think the Guardians just shot their part when it comes to Infinity War, the first part, and we all have to go back for Gauntlet this year."

It's pretty clear she's talking about two separate movies in the interview. If Avengers 4 really isn't called Infinity Gauntlet, it's more probable that this is merely a working title and the official one will be revealed much closer to the release date.

Thanos – who has been an omniscient but relatively unseen puppet-master of evil in the Marvel Cinematic Universe so far – is expected to finally step up as the main villain in Avengers: Infinity War as he attempts to get his hands on all of the Infinity Stones. In the comics, the gems, embedded into the aforementioned glove-like Gauntlet, enable the user to have God-like powers.

In the mid-credits scene attached to 2015's Avengers: Age of Ultron, Thanos (Josh Brolin) was glimpsed putting on the not-yet-embellished Gauntlet and saying: "Fine, I'll do it myself." So it's certainly not far-fetched to think that the planned fourth instalment would have the title Saldana mentioned.

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige previously said that future titles are currently being kept under wraps because they contain spoilers for Infinity War specifically. Revealing that Avengers 4 is called Infinity Gauntlet now confirms that Thanos manages to get hold of all of the Infinity Stones – consisting of the power stone, the space stone, the reality stone, the mind stone, the time stone and the soul stone – so it stands to reason that the studio don't want fans knowing for sure.
