Betrayed Cruise Passenger Buys New Ticket To Confront Alleged Ticket Thief Relaxing in Shipboard Hot Tub
Vanessa Phillips bought another ticket after allegedly being removed from a cruise booking, then confronted her companion onboard

Vanessa Phillips had been looking forward to a weeklong cruise all summer, but her holiday plans appeared to collapse just hours before she was due to board. After paying nearly $1,000 (£741) towards a cruise she had planned with acquaintance Armonte Wilson, Phillips said she discovered that her name had been removed from the reservation and that Wilson had stopped answering her calls.
Rather than go home, however, Phillips decided to salvage the holiday by purchasing another ticket. She eventually boarded the same MSC Seascape ship, and later came face-to-face with Wilson while he was relaxing in what appeared to be a shipboard hot tub.
The confrontation was filmed and quickly went viral, with both Phillips and Wilson offering competing accounts of what happened to the money. Neither person's allegations against the other have been established as fact.
Phillips Thought Her Cruise Was Already Paid For
Phillips said she had met Wilson during an earlier cruise and later connected with him online. When he advertised for cruise companions, she became interested in joining him for a planned sailing.
The pair agreed to share a cabin, and Phillips said her portion of the holiday came to roughly $1,000, covering the basic fare as well as extras such as a drinks package, speciality dining, Wi-Fi and excursions.
She made several payments through Venmo, including $100 (£74) on 27 June, another $100 several days later, $600 (£445) in early August and $198 (£147) in mid-August.
Phillips also provided information needed for the reservation, including her passport number. She said she was shown a booking confirming Wilson as the primary guest and herself as the second guest, with the balance paid in full.
Wilson Says the Payments Were Disputed
Wilson confirmed that Phillips had sent him the money but claimed the situation was not as straightforward as it appeared.
He said he discovered shortly before the sailing that the payments connected to the cruise had been disputed through Venmo. According to Wilson, the disputes caused his account to be suspended and left him with a negative balance.
Wilson said he was therefore suddenly facing the cost of the entire trip himself. Despite this, he said he continued communicating with Phillips because he initially thought she might explain what had happened or decide not to travel.
Eventually, Wilson said he no longer felt comfortable keeping her on the reservation and removed her name when he arrived at the port.
Phillips Says She Was the One Who Was Betrayed
Phillips disputes Wilson's explanation and said she did not dispute the payments before the sailing date. Instead, she said she only took that step after Wilson stopped responding to her shortly before boarding.
She contacted the cruise line directly and was told that she was no longer listed on the reservation. Phillips said she was devastated because she had already taken time away from work, used her holiday hours and made preparations for the trip. Rather than allow the money and effort she had already spent to go to waste, she asked whether another room was available.
She Paid Another $550 to Board the Ship
The cruise line was able to find Phillips another room for approximately $550 (£408). That meant she could still take the holiday she had been planning, but she was also determined to get answers from Wilson.
Phillips said she told the agent helping her that she intended to relax but also planned to find Wilson once she was onboard. Her plan eventually became reality.
She Found Wilson in a Shipboard Hot Tub
The confrontation that followed was captured on video and attracted millions of views.
Phillips approached Wilson while he was talking to fellow passengers in what appeared to be a hot tub on the ship's deck.
'You thought I wasn't going to make it?' she asked him.
Wilson replied that he knew she would make it. Phillips then asked where her money was. He said he had it, before acknowledging that he did not have it with him at that moment. She then questioned him about removing her from the reservation and demanded answers.
The argument became increasingly heated, with Phillips calling Wilson a liar and warning that the situation could become 'ugly.' She later clarified that she meant financially and legally rather than physically, saying she had no intention of putting her hands on him.
The Cruise Dispute Continued After the Confrontation
The confrontation did not resolve the financial dispute. Phillips said she reported the matter to ship security, local police and the FBI. She was also working with her bank over the possibility of recovering the money and considering further legal action.
Wilson, meanwhile, said he remained unable to access his Venmo account and was waiting for updates. He continued to deny that he had scammed Phillips, arguing that the reservation, payments and conversations surrounding the trip were genuine. He also said the viral attention had brought serious consequences, including harassment and death threats directed towards him and people close to him.
Both Phillips and Wilson have discouraged people from harassing the other.
The bizarre dispute has nevertheless become a cautionary tale for travellers, particularly those arranging holidays with people they do not know well. Paying travel providers directly and confirming that payments have actually been applied to a reservation can help prevent situations where one person's money and another person's booking become entangled.
