Warning: Spoilers ahead

In an interview with TVLine, show creator Erica Messer teased a shocking cliffhanger. However, she also explained that the shocking moment will not come in the form of a major death or a tragic scene but it will lead to major clues towards season 12 of CBS's super hit police procedural crime drama.

"It's a very team-centric episode because 'stuff' is hitting the fan and we're at the centre of it. It's not a 'bomb goes off/who survives?' cliffhanger but 'Oh my god, we thought we won,' and then, 'Oh no, we're just getting started.' It's a really fun, fresh way to launch into season 12," she told the website.

The synopsis of the season 11 finale reads:

The BAU is shocked when Hotch is apprehended by a SWAT team and suspected of conspiracy, and as the team scrambles to prove his innocence, they suspect a larger plot is on the horizon.

A promo released by CBS shows Hotch's children frightened after the SWAT team storms into their house to arrest him. Not that Hotch was ignorant of the upcoming unfortunate event, he was warned by Antonia Slade of a huge conspiracy brewing against him.

However, he is lucky to have a loyal FBI BAU team, which will race against time to find the real culprit who framed their boss.

Criminal Minds season 11 finale airs on 4 May at 9pm EST on CBS.
