Dolly Parton Planned Her Own Goodbye Years Ago as Nephew Fulfils Her Final Request

Dolly Parton decided years before her death who would announce her passing, entrusting the deeply personal responsibility to her nephew and longtime head of security, Bryan Seaver.

Seaver fulfilled that request on Tuesday when he appeared in an Instagram video to tell millions of fans that the country music legend had died aged 80. Parton died at Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center in Nashville after what her publicist described as a brief battle with cancer.

The type of cancer was not disclosed. Parton was surrounded by loved ones when she died, according to a statement from her representatives.

Dolly Chose Her Own Messenger

Seaver introduced himself as the son of Parton's sister Cassie and said he was speaking for the Parton and Owens families.

He explained that Parton had asked him years earlier to make the public announcement when the time came. At the time, he had struggled to comprehend the future reality of carrying out the request.

Seaver had served as Parton's head of security for more than 20 years, continuing a role previously held by his father, Larry. That close relationship made him more than a family spokesperson. He had spent decades protecting the singer while witnessing her private life behind the public image.

In his message, Seaver referred to Parton by the different names used within her family, including sister, aunt and Gigi. He described announcing her death as an honour mixed with pride and sadness.

However, he said the sadness belonged to those left behind, expressing his belief that Parton had been reunited with her late husband, Carl Dean, her parents and other relatives.

A Private Family Farewell

Parton also left instructions concerning her funeral. Her family said a small, private service would be held for immediate relatives, avoiding a large public ceremony despite her global fame.

Seaver revealed that she wanted to be laid to rest in soft cotton. He said the choice reflected her desire for comfort after spending much of her celebrated career dressed in elaborate rhinestones.

Fans were encouraged to share tributes through Parton's official social-media accounts and website. Instead of sending flowers, the family requested donations to Dolly Parton's Imagination Library.

The programme, founded in 1995, distributes free books to children from birth until they begin school. It grew from Parton's desire to honour her father, who was unable to read or write.

Health Problems Preceded Her Death

Parton had spoken publicly about health difficulties during the final years of her life. She said she had neglected some of her own medical needs while caring for Dean, who died in March 2025 after nearly six decades of marriage.

She later postponed a planned Las Vegas residency because she needed medical procedures and additional time to recover. Days before her death, Parton remained publicly optimistic about several projects, including a Broadway musical, a Nashville hotel and a museum devoted to her life.

Her final public messages gave little indication that her death was imminent. She continued discussing future work and reassuring fans that she remained creatively active.

A Legacy Beyond Country Music

Parton's seven-decade career produced classics including Jolene, 9 to 5, Coat of Many Colors and I Will Always Love You.

She sold more than 100 million records worldwide and built a business empire that included Dollywood. Her work also extended into film, television, theatre and publishing.

Yet her family placed equal emphasis on her philanthropy. The Imagination Library has delivered hundreds of millions of books, while Parton also funded medical research and supported communities affected by natural disasters.

By choosing her nephew to announce her death and leaving clear instructions for a quiet farewell, Parton ensured that her final public moment reflected the qualities behind her fame: family, faith, generosity and careful control of her own story.
