Ed Sheeran Branded 'Spineless' for Complicit Response to Macklemore Tour Scandal

Ed Sheeran has faced backlash after responding to the removal of Macklemore from his US tour, with some critics accusing the singer of failing to take a stronger position over the controversy.

The dispute began after Macklemore used his opening performances on Sheeran's Loop Tour in New Jersey to speak publicly in support of Palestinians. During his 4 September performance at MetLife Stadium, the rapper called for a 'Free Palestine' and performed his protest song 'Hind's Hall,' accompanied by footage depicting destruction in Gaza. He made similar comments during his second appearance the following night.

Macklemore was subsequently removed from the remaining US dates of the tour after several venues reportedly said they would not host concerts with him on the bill. The tour's promoter, Messina Touring Group, said venues had communicated that they would not allow the concerts to proceed with Macklemore involved, potentially affecting hundreds of thousands of ticket holders.

Sheeran Says the Decision Wasn't His

Sheeran addressed the controversy in a lengthy statement, insisting that Macklemore's removal was not his decision.

The singer said he had agreed to have Macklemore join the tour because he respected him as an artist and allowed his support acts to choose their own setlists. However, after Macklemore's New Jersey performances, Sheeran said venues on upcoming dates told him they would withdraw the shows if the rapper remained on the bill.

According to Sheeran, he spent the week attempting to find a compromise and spoke with venues, promoters and activists on different sides of the dispute. He ultimately said the promoter and venues made the final decision.

Sheeran also pushed back against accusations that he had been complicit in Macklemore's removal.

'I am not complicit,' he wrote, adding that he has personal views about the Israel-Palestine conflict but chooses not to express them publicly through his professional platform.

Macklemore's Comments Put Sheeran Under Pressure

Macklemore had previously described Sheeran as being in a difficult position but criticised what he called the singer's public-facing refusal to take sides.

In his statement following his removal, Macklemore said the situation represented a painful disagreement between two long-time friends. He argued that remaining neutral was itself a meaningful position when one side of a conflict has considerably greater military and financial power.

The dispute has since spread beyond the two musicians. Support acts including Finneas, Lukas Graham, Aaron Rowe and Beoga announced that they would no longer participate in the tour, citing their opposition to what they viewed as the suppression of Macklemore's political expression.

Online, some commenters have consequently accused Sheeran of being 'spineless' or 'complicit,' although those descriptions are opinions expressed by critics rather than established facts. One Reddit discussion about Macklemore's statement included users using both terms while debating whether Sheeran's decision to maintain an apolitical position was appropriate.

Meanwhile, Sheeran has maintained that his concerts are intended to be inclusive spaces focused on music rather than political debate. He said he respects Macklemore's commitment to his beliefs but believes there can be different approaches to advocating for peace and change.

The controversy now leaves Sheeran's tour facing significant disruption, while the disagreement between the two artists has become part of a broader debate over political expression, artistic freedom and whether musicians should use major concert platforms to address international conflicts.
