Samsung has started rolling out a flurry of official Jelly Bean updates for its flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S4, in recent times. This is to keep up with the competition in the Android smartphone market, as well as cater to the rising demand for the handset's improved functionality and bug-fixes among the user community.

Both the LTE (I9505) and the regular Galaxy S4 variant (I9500) recently got new official updates via Android 4.2.2 XXUAMDC and XXUAMDE Jelly Bean firmware. Now, Samsung's latest official Jelly Bean firmware, I9505XXUAMDN, offers bug-fixes for issues found in the previous release.

The latest official firmware is available for download through Samsung KIES, as well as via Over-The-Air (OTA) update for Galaxy S4 I9505 users in Europe. However, those who missed the twin opportunities can now download and install the same manually using this guide.

  • Back up important data and settings on phone using one of the recommended custom recovery tools such as ClockworkMod (CWM) or TWRP, as it creates a complete image of the existing phone setup.
  • Make sure that the phone has at least 80 per cent battery charge to prevent unexpected device shutdown (due to battery drain) during firmware installation, as this may inadvertently brick or damage the device.
  • Verify that the correct USB drivers are installed for the phone on computer (download Samsung Galaxy S4 I9505 USB drivers).
  • Ensure that USB Debugging mode is enabled on the phone navigating to Settings > Developer Options (if the device is running on Android 4.0 or later) or Settings > Applications > Development (if the phone is running on Android 2.3 or earlier).
  • As this is an official release, root access to the device will be lost soon after installing the firmware. Re-root the phone to regain full system access and be able to install root apps again.
  • Double check to see that the device is factory unlocked (not locked to a specific carrier) and CWM recovery is installed on it.
