George Clooney Reportedly Faces 'Ultimatum' From 'Ready To Give Up' Amal After Breaking Retirement Vow
As George Clooney throws himself into yet more work, sources say Amal is 'ready to give up' unless he finally keeps his promise to put family first.

For years, George Clooney has joked about slowing down, swapping film sets for family life and taking things easier as he got older. Yet at 64, the Oscar winner seems to be doing the opposite – and, according to insiders, his relentless work schedule is pushing his 11-year marriage to Amal Clooney to breaking point.
Friends say the human rights lawyer, 47, is 'flustered' and exhausted after watching her husband dive headfirst into new projects, despite years of private promises that he was on the verge of stepping back. Now, sources claim, Amal is 'ready to give him an ultimatum' if he will not finally put their family first.
George and Amal married in September 2014 in a lavish ceremony at the Aman Canal Grande resort in Venice, Italy. Three years later, in June 2017, they welcomed twins Ella and Alexander, now eight. Since then, the family have split their time between the UK, Italy, France and the US, carefully trying to balance two high-profile careers with raising their children as quietly as possible.
George Clooney 'Has Totally Gone Back On His Word'
Behind the glamorous red carpets and glossy photo calls, however, tension has reportedly been building. 'From Amal's perspec-tive, George has totally gone back on his word,' an insider explains. 'He's been promising her for years that he was almost ready to slow down and step away from acting to focus on his life with her and the kids.'
Last year, Clooney fulfilled a long-held dream by making his Broadway debut in the stage drama Good Night, and Good Luck at New York's Winter Garden Theatre – an experience billed as a once-in-a-lifetime artistic challenge. One rave line declared: 'THIS EXPERIENCE IS NOT TO BE MISSED.'
Amal, insiders say, did everything she could to make it work. 'Amal bent over backwards to support him doing his big Broadway play in New York,' the insider spills to GLOBE Magazine. 'She uprooted the kids' lives, and her own, because he promised it was going to be his swan song.'
According to those close to the couple, that sacrifice came with an unspoken deal: George would get his big moment on stage, then finally slow down. Instead, the opposite appears to have happened. 'But now that he's done the play and recovered from the exhaustion, he's totally changed his tune and he's talking about all kinds of new things he wants to take on,' the source adds.
George Clooney Work Obsession Leaves Amal 'Upset And Ready To Give Him An Ultimatum'
Far from easing off, the Syriana star is, reportedly, packing his diary well into 2026. The insider confides that the actor has signed on for the heist sequel Ocean's 14, slated to start shooting in 2026, and is finalising new deals for films he is keen to produce. 'He has a very packed schedule already, and he wants to add more,' the insider dishes. 'It's very hard on Amal because when George works, he disappears into it.'
Those who know the couple say this is not just about long hours, but about painful history. Like many marriages, theirs has weathered rough patches, and friends say both put a huge amount of effort into getting things 'back on track' in recent years. That is why Amal is said to be particularly hurt now. 'They put so much into getting their marriage back on track, and now it feels like he's ready to throw that all away. It's no wonder she's upset and ready to give him an ultimatum.'
For Amal, who juggles high‑stakes human rights cases with motherhood, the fear is that endless filming, producing and now stage work will once again push family life to the margins. Uprooting the twins for months in New York, only to be told the 'swan song' was just the start of another intense work cycle, has reportedly left her feeling misled.
Those close to the pair stress that Amal is immensely proud of George's success and has never expected him to walk away from his craft entirely. But, they say, she does want him to honour the spirit of the promises he has made behind closed doors – to be more present with Ella and Alexander, to carve out real downtime, and to treat their home life with the same seriousness as his biggest roles.
Whether that message results in a firm line in the sand now remains to be seen. What is clear, though, is that George's refusal to embrace retirement – or even a gentle downshift – is no longer just a career choice. For Amal, according to insiders, it is starting to look like a test of the vows they made in Venice more than a decade ago.
