'House of the Dragon' Scores 940M Streaming Minutes, Putting Pressure on Final Season
HBO's 'House of the Dragon' continues to dominate streaming charts as its third season concludes with impressive viewership

'House of the Dragon' drew 940 million streaming minutes in the week its third-season finale aired, putting HBO's 'Game of Thrones' prequel second on Nielsen's US chart behind 'The Big Bang Theory'. The fantasy drama's latest total for 3-9 August 2026 highlights the scale of its audience as it heads towards a confirmed fourth and final season.
'House of the Dragon' was watched for 940 million minutes across 26 available episodes on HBO Max. However, the figure needs some context.
The 940 million minutes were recorded during the week ending on 9 August, the same day the Season 3 finale aired. That means the total should not be described as viewing that occurred entirely after the finale. Instead, it demonstrates the sustained interest in the series as audiences watched episodes ahead of and around the season's conclusion.
'House of the Dragon' Remains a Streaming Powerhouse
The Nielsen result underlines the continued strength of HBO's Westeros franchise. 'House of the Dragon' ranked second overall among streaming programmes, ahead of Netflix's 'My Life With the Walter Boys', which recorded 896 million minutes, and Apple TV+'s 'Ted Lasso', which reached 866 million minutes. The HBO series also increased its viewing by 6% compared with the previous week.
The 940 million-minute total includes all available episodes rather than representing a single episode's audience.
Nielsen's streaming figures measure viewing on television sets in the US, meaning the number does not capture viewing on computers or mobile devices. That distinction is important when comparing the streaming figure with HBO's own audience figures for the Season 3 finale.
Season 3 Finale Reaches 21 Million Viewers
The Season 3 finale, which aired on 9 August, attracted 21 million viewers globally during its first three days across HBO and HBO Max, according to Warner Bros. Discovery's internal viewing figures combined with Nielsen measurement.
More than 11 million of those viewers were in the US.
The finale's three-day audience was only 2% below the 21.5 million viewers recorded for the Season 3 premiere, indicating that the show retained a substantial audience throughout its latest run.
Season 3 averaged more than 34 million global viewers per episode, according to HBO, putting it close to Season 2's 35 million average over the comparable period.
According to HBO, the performance puts the third season among HBO Max's three most-watched returning seasons.
Pressure Builds Ahead of Final Season
The strong figures will raise expectations for the show's fourth season, which has already been confirmed as its final season. After three seasons of political manoeuvring, shifting alliances and increasingly devastating battles, the remaining story will have to deliver a conclusion capable of matching the franchise's audience interest.
The decision to end the series with a fourth season also gives HBO an opportunity to bring the Targaryen civil war to a planned conclusion rather than allowing the story to continue indefinitely. The series is based on George R.R. Martin's 'Fire & Blood', which chronicles the history of the Targaryen dynasty.
For now, the 940 million-minute streaming figure offers HBO an encouraging sign. 'House of the Dragon' remains one of the biggest television shows, even as its third season has come to an end.
But with only one season left, that popularity also creates a significant challenge: the final chapter will have to satisfy an audience that remains invested in the fate of Westeros.
