Ghislaine Maxwell
When institutions stay silent, the vacuum fills—with whispers, with suspicion, and with the slow erosion of trust. Global UPDATES / X

A former inmate has made graphic claims about Ghislaine Maxwell's personal hygiene while in federal prison. The convicted sex trafficker reportedly 'smelled like armpits' and showered infrequently despite regular access to facilities.

Maxwell, 64, is serving a 20‑year sentence after being found guilty of sex trafficking and related offences for her role in helping Jeffrey Epstein abuse minors.

The inmate, who says she lived at the same facility with Maxwell from 2023 to 2025, described persistent body odour and said other prisoners showed her little respect.

These allegations arise as Maxwell continues her sentence at a lower‑security prison in Texas.

Maxwell's Poor Hygiene Behind Bars

According to the former prisoner's account, shared by TMZ, Maxwell did not use the prison's showers frequently. The inmate claimed Maxwell showered only once or twice a week, even though showers were available and accessible to all inmates.

This reportedly led to noticeable body odour, described as smelling like 'armpits,' especially after she exercised.

Maxwell was said to be active in prison, often jogging or briskly walking around the recreation yard. While physical activity can lead to sweating, the ex‑inmate told reporters that Maxwell still did not wash regularly afterwards, which contributed to her reputation among other prisoners.

The anonymous source spoke only on condition of confidentiality because she remains in Bureau of Prisons custody, meaning her claims cannot currently be independently verified.

Reputation Among Fellow Prisoners

In addition to hygiene allegations, fellow inmates reportedly grew to refer to Maxwell with hostile nicknames linked to her conviction. The term 'chomo,' prison slang for child molester, was said to be used by others as a sign of contempt rather than respect.

This label reflects the deep stigma attached to crimes involving minors within prison culture.

Despite the alleged lack of respect, the inmate claimed that Maxwell was never physically assaulted while in the Florida facility.

She said that most prisoners avoided any violence because the Special Housing Unit or the hole where violent offenders are kept in near‑total isolation is seen as a severe punishment no one wants.

Transfer to Texas and Current Status

Maxwell served time at Federal Correctional Institution Tallahassee in Florida. Later, she was moved in August 2025 to the Federal Prison Camp in Bryan, Texas, where she is expected to spend the rest of her sentence.

Federal prison camps like the one in Bryan are considered minimum‑security facilities, with fewer restrictions compared to standard federal prisons.

Her transfer followed meetings with senior Justice Department officials about related cases, including interviews about Epstein's network of associates. Maxwell has repeatedly denied that US President Donald Trump committed any crimes with Epstein, according to reporting.

There has been no public response from Maxwell's legal team to the inmate's claims about her hygiene.

Maxwell's Conviction and Sentence

Ghislaine Maxwell was convicted in New York in December 2021 on charges related to child sex trafficking and abuse for her involvement with Epstein, who died in prison in 2019 before his own trial. She received a 20‑year federal prison sentence, a punishment that will keep her incarcerated through the early 2040s.

Maxwell was recently deposed by the U.S. House Oversight Committee about the Epstein case and refused to answer questions, invoking her Fifth Amendment rights. This has frustrated lawmakers, but it has not yet resulted in new legal charges or sentence changes

As of recent, Maxwell's lawyers are actively fighting the release of thousands of pages of documents tied to civil cases against her and Epstein. They argued that a new law forcing disclosure is unconstitutional.

No new criminal charges against Maxwell have been publicly filed after millions of Epstein Files were released, so her sentence will remain.
