Green Day's pre-concert politically-charged remark made waves ahead of the official Super Bowl 2026 broadcast Green Day/Instagram

Green Day's Super Bowl 2026 performance has set social media on fire. Billie Joe Armstrong's political remark, made to target the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and US President Donald Trump amid his band's high-energy performance, became one of the highlights of the show. Fans were quick to share clips of Billie Joe Armstrong's statement across multiple platforms such as X (formerly Twitter), Instagram, and TikTok, using the viral hashtag #GreenDaySuperBowl.

On Sunday, Green Day opened up Super Bowl LX at Levi's Stadium with a performance of several songs — but missing were the most political lyrics from some of the tracks.

The punk-rock band opened up Super Bowl LX at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, California on Sunday, 8 February 2026. They performed a couple of their hit songs, from Good Riddance (Time of Your Life) as Steve Young, Jerry Rice, Joe Montana and other local San Francisco Bay Area heroes made their entrance, Boulevard of Broken Dreams, American Idiot, and Holiday, one of the band's most sharply political track.

American Idiot, the band's 2004 hit song, kicked off Green Day's Super Bowl 2026 performance, and didn't fail to immediately captivate the crowd. The lead singer's vocals, the stage, and even the pyrotechnics all made for one stellar performance. Not long after, the band graced the crowd with their favourite hit songs.

Green Day MAGA Lyric Change in the Super Bowl

Fans also didn't let Green Day subtly shading Trump slip that easily. The band from California's Super Bowl LX performance at Levi's Stadium was marred by political innuendo after lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong criticised ICE agents in a pre-Super Bowl concert held on Friday. He said during the event, 'This goes out to all the ICE agents out there. Wherever you are: quit your s*****-ass job. Quit that shitty job you have. Come on this side of the line. Because when this is over — and it will be over at some point in time — Kristi Noem, Stephen Miller, J.D. Vance, Donald Trump, they're going to drop you like a bad f****** habit,' as shared by The Hollywood Reporter.

As he sang their hit song, 'American Idiot,' Armstrong can be heard singing the line 'the subliminal mind-f*** America' without any intent of censoring the lyrics. NBC must have anticipated this and botched the lyrics to make it less clear. As fans may have expected, Green Day decided against changing the lyrics from the second stanza of the song, which went from 'I'm not a part of a redneck agenda' to 'I'm not a part of a MAGA agenda.' Instead, the verse was completely cut from the song.

When their song Holiday began, fans heard the original lyrics for its first two verses, but the song's bridge, which was most controversial as it begins with the line, 'Sieg Heil to the President Gasman' aimed at former US president George W. Bush at the time of its release in early 2000's, was entirely skipped, as shared by CNN. Instead of an improvised bridge, the fans were treated to the next part of the medley, with the band singing American Idiot next.

Green Day gained massive success in 1994 with the release of their album entitled Dookie, which ended up selling over 10 million copies in the US. Their hits 'Basketcase' and 'Longview' were part of this album. Good Riddance (Time of Your Life), another major hit of the band, was released in 1997 under the album Nimrod. In 2015, the band was inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
