GTA 6 Won't Just Let You Wait Out a Timer Anymore; You Have to Erase Evidence and Hide Vehicles
Explore the innovative police mechanics in GTA 6 that demand strategic thinking and stealthy manoeuvres

Getting away with a crime in GTA 6 won't just mean breaking line of sight and waiting for wanted stars to fade.
Rockstar's overhauled police system in GTA 6 ties pursuit to what officers actually know about Jason and Lucia, forcing players to destroy CCTV footage, swap clothes, ditch vehicles and even split the duo to scrub evidence before the heat dies down.
How the GTA 6 Police System Tracks Evidence
To recall, earlier GTA titles largely treated wanted levels as a timer that reset once you slipped out of view. In GTA 6, that model is gone. Crimes must be witnessed or triggered by an alarm before police respond, and the new Heat system runs alongside the traditional wanted stars to show exactly what information law enforcement has collected.
That information appears as icons under the stars. A camera means CCTV footage exists. A clothes hanger means your outfit is logged. A single head silhouette means your physical description is on file.
A car icon means your getaway vehicle is identified. A couple icon means Jason and Lucia were spotted together. Each icon is an independent evidence vector, and clearing one does not clear the others.
Rockstar design director Rob Nelson told IGN that a crime must be witnessed, or an alarm must be triggered, for the law to hear about it at all.
NPCs can call it in, robbery alarms can fire, and stolen vehicles may report themselves via built-in trackers. The result is a less predictable rhythm where your actions alone do not dictate when officers arrive.
Wanted Stars and Heat Zones in GTA 6
The wanted stars themselves now carry state. Solid white stars mean officers have a direct line of sight. Flashing white stars mean sight is broken but police are searching your last known position.
Hollow stars mean a crime has been reported but there is no suspect description yet. Red stars mean you have technically escaped pursuit but remain inside an active search area, and at the highest level that heat zone can spread across the entire Vice City map.
This is where the erase-and-hide loop bites. If you return to a hot zone with evidence icons still lit, the clock resets and you can be dragged straight back into a full chase.
At six stars, the search radius is reported to consume the whole map, making low-profile patience smarter than forcing another confrontation. Sometimes waiting is the correct play, but only after you have removed the data that leads cops back to you.
Rockstar demonstrated the interaction during a store robbery gone wrong. According to Vice, the clerk was knocked out without being killed, CCTV footage was destroyed, and the pair tried to crack the safe code.
Someone had already called the police, however, forcing them to abandon the job before officers arrived and surrounded the building. Police can also establish a perimeter around a recently robbed store in case you return, and their vehicles carry shotguns, assault rifles and body armour, though every police car has a tracker that makes it a poor getaway choice.
What Players Must Do To Clear Heat in GTA 6
Escaping the chase and escaping the heat are not the same problem. The cleanest getaways look less like panic and more like methodical cleanup. Check your star state first, read every icon underneath, then act on each one separately.
A full outfit swap combined with a meaningful hairstyle change invalidates both clothing and identity evidence. Masks worn before a crime prevent facial identification from registering at all, but they do not block clothing, vehicle or companion tracking, so the rest of the evidence board still needs attention.
Splitting Jason and Lucia up during an escape can reportedly remove an entire wanted star in some situations, though police will still hunt each protagonist using their individual descriptions.
Ditching or destroying your vehicle, changing clothes, hiding weapons and separating the pair are all confirmed countermeasures. Pre-crime stealth is always cheaper than post-crime cleanup, and returning to the scene with lit icons active is the fastest way back to six stars.
The larger goal appears to be making law enforcement and civilian behaviour feel reactive to what is actually happening. NPCs caught near shootouts will not simply run away in every situation, with civilians who cannot safely escape potentially crouching behind police cars, walls or benches for cover. Combined with the Heat system and the different types of evidence police can collect, GTA 6 gives players considerably more to consider after committing a crime.
Sometimes the smartest move in GTA 6 may not be getting as far away from the police as possible, but figuring out what they know and removing that information before it leads them back to Jason and Lucia. And yes, that includes hiding vehicles properly, not just parking around the corner and hoping for the best.
Nothing is confirmed beyond what Rockstar has shown in previews, so some thresholds may shift before launch.
