There's no turning back the time for Cher today as the iconic singer celebrates her 70th birthday. Over the past five decades, the Believe hitmaker has become a fashion icon, the epitome of glamour and sass and a downright entertaining celebrity.

Cher, born Cherilyn Sarkisian, was introduced to the spotlight as one-half of the folk rock duo Sonny & Cher, sharing her musical career with husband Sonny Bono. The power couple were married for six years until 1975 but had cemented their place in music history with their string of catchy hits and real-life love story.

When the marriage crumbled and the parents of Chaz Bono divorced, Cher sought a solo career and signed to Warner Bros. Records in 1975. From then on, history was made with the singer regularly scoring chart hits with tracks such as Believe and If I Could Turn Back Time, all of which were tinged with rock and disco marking Cher's reinvention away from Sonny.

Reflecting on her personal and professional relationship with Sonny, Cher recalled in a 2010 interview with Vanity Fair what her ex-husband once told her: "'One day you are going to leave me. You are going to go on and do great things'. I wouldn't have left him if he hadn't had such a tight grip – such a tight grip."

Cher became an even bigger star as a solo artist and has served as inspiration for many younger musicians over the generations. In celebration of her milestone birthday, IBTimes UK reflects on Cher's career in numbers.
