Hugh Jackman has undergone surgery for skin cancer.

The Australian actor revealed that he had received treatment after seeking medical advice for a growth on his nose.

Posting an image of his face with a bandage on his nose on his Instagram account, he admitted that it was his wife Deborra-Lee Furness, 57, who urged him to see a doctor.

"Deb said to get the mark on my nose checked. Boy she was right!' Hugh explained.

Although the 45-year-old actor is now recuperating, he urged his fans to take the same action should they have any similar concerns.

"Please don't be foolish like me," he wrote. "Get yourself checked. And USE sunscreen!!!"

Jackman was diagnosed with basal cell carcinoma (BCC), which is linked to sun exposure and accounts for about 75% of skin cancers.

The cancer rarely spreads but if left untreated can damage and disfigure surrounding tissue.

In September, Keeping up with the Kardashians star Bruce Jenner reportedly received treatment for skin cancer.

The former Olympic athlete is said to have had 30 stitches after the procedure.
