Hunter Biden's Infamous Laptop Just Became a Meme Coin, With Trump in the Crosshairs

Hunter Biden is turning one of the most explosive controversies attached to his name into cryptocurrency, and the most provocative part has little to do with the laptop itself.

The Hunter Biden $LAPTOP meme coin is scheduled to launch on September 9 on Base, the Ethereum layer-2 network built by Coinbase. Biden confirmed the project on X on September 7, posting '$LAPTOP' and the launch date alongside a montage of news coverage about the laptop.

The real twist is where some of the tokens are headed: wallets belonging to people who lost money on Donald Trump's $TRUMP meme coin are among those eligible for an airdrop.

Hunter Biden Targets Trump's Crypto Losers

The $LAPTOP token will have a maximum supply of one billion coins, with 20% reserved for two rounds of airdrops. The first tranche includes eligible wallets with losses on $TRUMP, as well as Biden's Substack subscribers and a mailing list associated with video journalist Andrew Callaghan.

That gives the Hunter Biden cryptocurrency an unmistakable political edge. Trump's Official Trump token launched shortly before his second inauguration and briefly reached a market capitalisation of about $15 billion (£11.14 billion) before falling roughly 97% from its peak.

Receiving $LAPTOP is not the same as recovering those losses, of course. The value of a meme coin can rise or collapse with the market, meaning the airdrop itself offers no guaranteed compensation.

From Laptop Scandal to Crypto Brand

The name $LAPTOP dates back to 2019, when Hunter Biden left a computer at a repair shop in Delaware. The FBI later seized the device, and material attributed to it became a major political flashpoint before the 2020 presidential election.

The material included emails, financial records, and deeply personal content. Hunter Biden's lawyers have disputed the integrity of files that circulated publicly, arguing that some material had been manipulated.

The controversy nevertheless became deeply embedded in the political fight surrounding the Biden family. Now, years later, Hunter Biden is using the shorthand associated with that controversy as a cryptocurrency brand.

It is an extraordinary second life for an old political story.

Politics Is Built Into the Token

The Hunter Biden crypto project becomes even more unusual when its tokenomics are examined.

Thirty per cent of the one-billion-token supply is allocated to founders, including Biden, with those tokens locked for six months and then vested over the following two years. Another 20% is reserved for airdrops.

A further 30% is tied to predetermined prediction-market outcomes. Reported conditions include a Democratic victory in the 2028 presidential election, Bitcoin reaching a new all-time high, and $LAPTOP's valuation surpassing that of $TRUMP. Tokens associated with outcomes settled as 'YES' are to be burned, while those tied to 'NO' outcomes are directed to charity.

That puts Trump's political and crypto world directly into the mechanics of Biden's project, not merely its marketing.

The Backlash Started Before Launch

The Trump $TRUMP meme coin connection has already attracted criticism from crypto traders, even though $LAPTOP has yet to officially launch.

Kraken deleted a promotional post after backlash, while Callaghan and a Coinbase Base executive distanced themselves from the project. Base's involvement also needs to be understood correctly: the token being deployed on Base does not mean Coinbase has endorsed or partnered with it.

The controversy has also produced copycats. At least 14 imitation LAPTOP tokens appeared across four blockchain networks within an hour of news of the project, according to reporting citing DEX Screener data.

That scramble is a reminder of how quickly political celebrity can collide with speculative crypto trading.

A Laptop Gets a Second Life

Hunter Biden has increasingly spoken publicly about cryptocurrency, arguing that lawmakers should understand its potential and describing decentralised digital currency as the 'inevitable future'.

Now that interest has collided with the most notorious political controversy associated with his name.
