A leading Islamic cleric who appeared in a sex tape with two teachers in a hotel in Bogor has been charged with violating the country's anti-pornography law.

Saiful Sardi Jayadi was sacked from his position at the Bogor chapter of the Indonesian Council of Ulema, the country's top Muslim clerical body, after a video of his alleged sexual encounter with two nursery teachers was leaked onto the internet.

Jayadi admitted to starring nude in the six-minute video, entitled "2 PNS Hebohkan Puncak" (Two Civil Servants Create a Stir Puncak), telling police that he recorded the threesome for his personal use.

The sex tape was reportedly recorded in 2011 but only emerged online last week and was shared via sites such as 4Shared and Mediafire before it was taken down.

Bogor police chief Sony Mulvianto said: "Based on the investigation of S.S. police they changed his status from witness to suspect," adding that "the suspect did it in a hotel in Bogor".

He said officers were now keeping watch outside the disgraced cleric's home due to threats of violence from local residents.

A probe has been launched into how the video appeared online and have questioned eight suspects, including the two women on the tape.

The women, both allegedly nursery teachers from Cisarua, could be sacked by the education agency in the district.

Agency head Aas Turmika said: "We recommended they be fired because of so many complaints from parents who feel concerned over what the teachers did."

Jayadi could face up to 12 years in prison under the law, which forbids the publication of any sexual materials, whether photographs or moving images.
