International Kissing Day, that falls on 6 July, first began in the UK, but now has been adopted worldwide.

The official awareness day site says the day "aims to make us appreciate a kiss in its own right. No conventions, no social norms, just a kiss. Across the globe, we embrace the kiss by embracing someone else."

Susan Quilliam, official sex and relationship expert for the Durex brand of sexual health and pleasure products, said kissing improves the bond in a relationship.

"Being so intimate physically is inevitably going to bond and strengthen you as a couple. It's also a statement to ourselves and to other people that we trust, desire and care for each other," Quilliam told Reveal.co.uk.

There are some surprising health benefits of puckering up too.

"Kissing also acts a natural face lift as we use up to 30 muscles in and around the mouth. It helps to boost our immune system and can burn between two to six calories a minute." she said. "Any skin-on-skin contact, such as kissing, helps to reduce stress and helps us relax by releasing oxytocin."
