iOS 5: iPhone Basebands and Unlocks
HITB 2012: MuscleNerd Explains Evolution of iPhone Baseband and Unlocks [VIDEO] IBTimes

The untethered jailbreak for the iPhone 4, the iPhone 3GS, the iPad, the iPod Touch 3, the iPod touch 4 and the Apple TV 2, as well as the iPhone 4S, the iPad 2, the iPad 3 and the Apple TV 3 is still in the works and while we await the highly anticipated iOS 5.1 untethered jailbreak, a new Redsn0w update from the iPhone Dev Team brings minor bug fixes to the table.

Just a couple of weeks ago, in an earlier IBTimes UK report, we saw the release of a Redsn0w 0.9.10b8 update enabling us the ability to backup iPhone's activation tickets. The new update features only a couple of bug fixes to make the .zip files more compatible with the native Windows explorer.

Dev Team has just updated their blog with the following brief note:

"The 0.9.10b8b update to redsn0w makes the zip files more compatible with the native Windows explorer (which doesn't like leading slashes in the filenames)."

The catch with the new Redsn0w update is that you no longer have to re-hack (jailbreak) your device if it is already jailbroken. Nevertheless, those of you looking to do a fresh install could download the updated utility from here.

As of now, the untethered jailbreak is available for A4 and A5 devices only on iOS 5.0.1 and lower versions, while iOS 5.1 only offers tethered solutions for A4 devices. The good news, however, is that hackers have made rapid progress in unearthing all the necessary exploits to release a public version of the untethered jailbreak for iOS 5.1.

Pod2g recently revealed his successful attempt at performing an untethered jailbreak on his iPhone 4 running iOS 5.1 and we can confidently say the elusive jailbreak is not too far now.

Those of you who have already jailbroken your iOS device running iOS 5.0.1 are advised to avoid the iOS 5.1 software update, which does not include any major features. You might try using the iOS software update killer posted here, which helps you retain your existing jailbreak exploits until the final public release of the iOS 5.1 untethered jailbreak surfaces.

You can download the latest version of Redsn0w 0.9.10b8b from here for Mac and from here for Windows.
