James Gunn Just Teased Official Supergirl Movie: New Film Coming 2026 Following Superman Success
Supergirl will explore why the character has such a different starting point in the franchise to her put-together cousin, Superman

It's an exciting time for DCU fans as James Gunn just released an official poster for a Supergirl movie following Superman's box office success.
Supergirl, played by House of Dragon star Millie Alcock, made a cameo in the first installment of the new DC universe.
Her character showed up drunk at the end of Superman looking for her dog Krypto at the Fortress of Solitude.
Superman has proved itself as a box office hit, amassing a whopping £224 million ($300 million) worldwide before its second weekend and breaking records as the biggest Tuesday box office hit for 2025.
Following its success, director James Gunn is now teasing a second installment to the DCU.
Here's everything we know about Supergirl so far.
Supergirl Will Hit Theatres June 2026
The projected release date for Supergirl is 26 June 2026.
James Gunn took to X yesterday to share the first official poster for Supergirl. On the poster, Millie Alcock is dressed as Supergirl sipping on a blue slushy. The iconic House of Elm crest appears on the wall beside her. Riffing off the Superman marketing which included the phrase 'Look Up,' the word 'Up' has been spraypainted over so it reads 'Look Out.'
I, Tonya director Craig Gillespie will be at the helm of Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, which gets its name from the iconic comic book.

Leading lady, Millie Alcock, posted a photo of herself on Instagram reading the comic, which the movie's plot will be based on. She plays Kara Zor-El AKA Supergirl, Superman's less put-together cousin.
The Supergirl cast will star Matthias Schoenaerts as Krem of the Yellow Hills, Eve Ridley as Ruthye Marye Knoll and David Krumholtz and Emily Beecham as Supergirl's parents. Krypto will also make a reappearance in Supergirl. Jason Momoa will make his return to DC as Lobo. The actor had previously played Aquaman in the DC extended universe.
Why Millie Alcock Is Perfect For Supergirl
When Alcock was first announced to play Supergirl in the new Superman movie in January last year, James Gunn vouched for the actress as being the perfect fit for Supergirl.
'I first became aware of her in House of the Dragon but I was blown away by her varied auditions and screen tests for #Supergirl,' he shared on Instagram.
'She embodies Kara as envisioned by @tomking_tk, @bilquis and Ana Nogueira,' he added.
Supergirl's story is vastly different from the Man of Steel's, and her first drunk appearance in Superman creates a starting point for her eventual growth.
The film will explore why the two superheroes have very different starting points in the franchise through how challenging Kara's upbringing was compared to Clark's spent on Earth.
'She's a mess. She's a total mess,' Gunn said in an interview with ScreenRant. 'I mean, I think as we learn, she's had a completely different background from Superman. A much more difficult background,' he said.
Gunn elaborated, 'He's had this wonderful upbringing by these two parents that loved him and were very healthy. And her background was much different than that. And she's ended up different than her cousin.'
