James Van Der Beek spent his final weeks the same way he had increasingly chosen to live after his cancer diagnosis. The millennial royalty was close to home, surrounded by family, and spoke openly about rest, gratitude, and time in his final moments.

The Dawson's Creek star died on 11 February 2026, at age 48, following complications from Stage 3 colorectal cancer. His wife, Kimberly Van Der Beek, confirmed the news in a statement posted to his official Instagram account, writing that he 'passed peacefully' and met his final days with 'courage, faith, and grace.'

In the weeks leading up to his death, Van Der Beek left behind a series of pictures and videos that now serve as a quiet record of how he chose to spend his last days.

Van Der Beek Was Diagnoised with Colorectal Cancer

Van Der Beek was first diagnosed with colorectal cancer in August 2023 but kept the news private for more than a year. He publicly revealed his Stage 3 diagnosis in November 2024, later telling NBC's Today show in December 2025 that the experience had reshaped his outlook.

He described the diagnosis as a turning point that pushed him to re-evaluate how he spent his time. According to his interviews, he focused on slowing down and being present with his wife and their six children.

The diagnosis reportedly took a financial toll on his family, and the situation went to the point where he was auctioning clothing and things related to Dawson Creek to raise funds for his treatment.

A GoFundMe page was also run by his close friend in order to raise money for his cancer treatment.

His Final Instagram Post

Van Der Beek's last personal Instagram post, which was made on 25 January, was not about illness. It was about family.

The actor shared a carousel of photos celebrating his daughter Annabel's birthday, noting that she shares the date with his father. In the first image, he hugged Annabel tightly outdoors, both smiling. The second featured Annabel with her grandfather.

In a lengthy caption, he reflected on the similarities between his daughter and his father, writing about their 'open, warm, loving, gentle heart' and expressing gratitude for having them in his life. 'The world is a better place because the two of you are in it,' he wrote, ending with, 'I love you with all my heart.'

There was no mention of his health. The focus was entirely on love, family and appreciation.

A Video About Rest and Recovery

Days earlier, in mid-January, Van Der Beek posted a video discussing New Year's resolutions. Speaking directly to the camera, he questioned the pressure to begin anew in 'the dead of winter.'

'I'm going to take winter to recover, to rest,' he said in the clip, encouraging followers to align personal change with natural cycles. At the time, the message read as philosophical. In hindsight, many fans have interpreted the word 'recover' as a subtle acknowledgement of his declining health.

The post drew thousands of supportive comments praising his perspective and calm presence.

Time with Family and Close Friends

Friends later shared photos that offered a glimpse into his final days.

Former WWE star Stacy Keibler posted an image of the two watching a sunset, writing about the importance of sacred time and presence. In the photo, Van Der Beek appeared physically frail, seated in a wheelchair, yet peaceful.

Designer Erin Fetherston shared a similar tribute, describing him as spiritually strong despite his illness.

His wife's own December posts showed the couple together in quiet, affectionate moments. None referenced his deteriorating condition directly, maintaining the couple's preference for privacy.

Moreover, according to his social media, Van Der Beek decided not to document hospital visits or medical setbacks in his final days. Instead, he focused on sharing what he cherished most: his family and friends.
