James Wilson, the man shot by police in South Shields earlier this week, has died of his injuries. The 24-year-old Wilson died in hospital late on Friday night (1 April), according to a statement from the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC).

He was shot once in the chest in the early hours of Tuesday morning, after reports from the public that he had been seen with a handgun. Carl Gumsley, the commissioner of the IPCC, said: "Our thoughts are with James' friends and family at this very difficult time."
