Jennifer Aniston Teases Darker, Grittier Season 4 of 'The Morning Show': 'It's Not Friends Anymore'
Aniston calls The Morning Show season four her toughest role yet, promising darker, more intense drama

Jennifer Aniston has confirmed that The Morning Show is entering its next chapter, with season 4 currently in post-production. This time, she says, the tone is deeper and darker — a world away from the sitcom roots that made her famous.
Speaking to People in an interview published on 5 July, the actress offered a glimpse into what filming the latest season was really like. 'It was so hard,' Aniston admitted. 'But it's a great season. It's jam-packed, that's for sure.'
'It's not Friends anymore'
Aniston has never shied away from reinvention, but with The Morning Show, she is now several seasons into one of her most demanding roles yet, both on screen and behind the scenes.
'The Morning Show is just a beast to film,' she told People. 'It is layered, it's complicated, it's emotional, it hits on a lot of topics and current events, so let's just say, it's not Friends.'
'It takes a lot out of you,' she continued. 'We're involved in every single aspect of the show, on top of just the performance side, which is a big piece of it. But I've got incredible support, and we have such an incredible team.'
Aniston plays Alex Levy, a high-profile journalist navigating the politics of a modern newsroom. The series, which launched on Apple TV+, is known for tackling real-world issues with nuance and urgency, from workplace dynamics to media accountability and public trust.
A role that changed her
While Aniston built her early career on sitcoms and romantic comedies, this project has pushed her in ways she didn't expect. 'It's completely changed me as an actor,' she said. 'It's one of the hardest jobs I've ever had. And it's been the most rewarding because of that.'
Season 4 wrapped filming in late 2024 and is currently in the edit. Although a release date has not been confirmed, Aniston says the team is shaping something sharp and emotionally charged. 'We're still in post-production, but I think it's shaping up,' she explained. 'It's really good, it's really suspenseful.'
A story that reflects the times
In a separate interview with RTÉ Entertainment, Aniston shared how much the show tries to stay connected to the real world. 'I think it just reflects what we are all swimming in out there in the world,' she said. 'It feels like there's never a dull moment and that's what we try to do on the show, represent what's happening and the sort of zeitgeist of what's happening in the world.'
That sense of timeliness has helped The Morning Show stand out. With past storylines exploring themes like #MeToo, misinformation and corporate power, it has consistently mirrored the cultural mood.
Alongside Aniston, the series stars Reese Witherspoon, Billy Crudup and Jon Hamm. The chemistry between the leads and their willingness to wade into difficult territory has earned the show multiple award nominations and a loyal fanbase.
No sign of slowing down
Despite the intensity, Aniston seems energised by what lies ahead. 'I honestly can't believe it's season 4 and we've been doing this since 2017. How is that possible?' she said.
With the series still in post-production, fans will have to wait a little longer for its return. But if Aniston's words are anything to go by, season 4 will not just continue the story — it will raise the bar.
