American singer/songwriter John Mayer was reportedly 'gutted' when pop star girlfriend Katy Perry turned down his marriage proposal. According to Grazia magazine, the 35-year-old popped the question last week after seeking permission from her parents but she turned it down.

"John's proposal really unnerved Katy. Even though they have discussed it, she thought it was too soon. John was gutted," a source said, "Katy loves John, but doesn't feel she has had enough healing time since her divorce. She told him she just needed a bit more time to feel whole in herself again."

The 28-year-old Teenage Dream singer was previously married to comedian Russell Brand, but divorced after 14 months. She was also involved, briefly, with Robert Ackroyd, of Florence + The Machine. Meanwhile, Mayer, who has previously dated Jennifer Love Hewitt, Jessica Simpson, Jennifer Aniston and Taylor Swift, has a reputation as a Casanova.

"John won't run from Katy again," an insider said, "He knows his bad-boy reputation and what happened with Russell hurt Katy, and he'll do whatever it takes to show he's the one she should marry."

Perry, who was named Billboard magazine's Woman of the Year, talked about her romance with Mayer in Vogue magazine's July issue.

"Yes [I was seeing John, now it's] over," she said, "I was madly in love with him. I still am madly in love with him. All I can say about that relationship is that he's got a beautiful mind. Beautiful mind, tortured soul. I do have to figure out why I am attracted to these broken birds."
