England and Charlton Athletic footballer Jordan Cousins has been arrested on suspicion of raping a 12-year-old girl.

Cousins, who has captained England at under 16-level, was questioned by Metropolitan Police after the youngster contacted detectives.

The alleged victim claims a youth bought her a pair of trainers before the attack which she says occurred just before Christmas in Greenwich, South East London.

The England under-18 player is believed to have insisted he is totally innocent of the charges. Cousins has since been bailed pending further investigation.

Cousins, who signed with League One Charlton on his 17th birthday last March having joined at under-13 level, is expected to play in the youth version of Euro 2012.

Hailing from Greenwich, Cousins can play at right-back, central defence and midfield.

A spokesman for Scotland Yard said "inquiries continue" on the matter.
