Julliard Just Wished Julia Stiles 'Good Luck' in 'Dancing With the Stars': Now Fans Think She Has 'Unfair Advantage'

Julia Stiles has found herself at the centre of an unexpected Dancing With the Stars conversation after Juilliard publicly wished her luck on the competition, prompting some fans to wonder whether the actress had actually attended the prestigious performing arts school.

The confusion is understandable for anyone familiar with Stiles' most famous dance role. In the 2001 film Save the Last Dance, she played Sara Johnson, a ballet dancer who dreams of being accepted into Juilliard. In the movie, Sara ultimately earns a place at the school.

But in real life, Stiles never attended Juilliard.

Juilliard Played Along With the Confusion

After Stiles was announced as part of the Season 35 cast of Dancing With the Stars, Juilliard joined the excitement with a playful social media post.

The school shared Stiles' promotional image and wrote that, after checking its records, she had not actually attended Juilliard, while adding that it still loved her and was cheering her on.

The post quickly caught attention because of the obvious connection to Save the Last Dance. Rather than simply being a factual correction, it appeared to be a tongue-in-cheek reference to the character Stiles played more than two decades ago.

Stiles herself appeared to take the joke in good spirits, responding to Juilliard with a message wishing its students luck.

Fans Joke About Her 'Unfair Advantage'

The Juilliard post nevertheless gave fans another reason to revisit Stiles' dance credentials ahead of her appearance on Dancing With the Stars.

Because Save the Last Dance remains closely associated with Stiles, some viewers have assumed that she must have received serious dance training or attended a prestigious performing arts institution before joining the competition.

That is not the case. Stiles has repeatedly clarified that she was not a trained dancer and did not attend Juilliard. She also recently explained that a body double performed many of the more demanding dance sequences in Save the Last Dance.

The actress has said that expectations created by the film actually made her relationship with dance more complicated.

'Save the Last Dance' Wasn't the Expected Advantage

Ahead of Dancing With the Stars, Stiles explained that she stopped taking dance classes after making Save the Last Dance because people expected her to be an accomplished dancer.

She has described joining the show as an opportunity to rediscover her confidence and enjoyment of dancing rather than simply continuing something she had already mastered. That makes her casting particularly different from the assumption that she entered the competition with years of elite dance-school training.

Stiles, competing alongside professional dancer Ezra Sosa, performed a quickstep during the Season 35 premiere. Their routine earned 18 out of 30 points from the judges.

Juilliard Eventually Took the Joke Further

The school later sent Stiles and Sosa a playful apology, joking that her alumni records had supposedly been filed under the name Sara Johnson, the fictional character from Save the Last Dance.

The package reportedly included Juilliard merchandise, with the school telling Stiles that it was proud of her and cheering her on during the competition. Stiles and Sosa also directly clarified the situation, making it clear once again that the actress never attended Juilliard.

So while fans may continue joking about Stiles having a secret Juilliard advantage, the real story is considerably simpler: her connection to the famous school exists on screen, not on her actual academic record.
